WE BRING RETRO ST YLE BACK TO OUR DAY

Since people can easily access worldwide information through var-

ious tools, they have been busy catching up with modern society’s rapid
development. However, since we’ve come this far why don’t we look back
and give a flashback for the old things, the nostalgic things, the things
we should preserve and respect. Along with this idea and our passionate
love for Vietnam’s heroic history, from young people’s appreciative point
of view, our team tried to dig into our older generation’s past. We have
been taking serious research to find out about the core historical values
that can describe a heroic Vietnam in the past. And more specifically we
had to find something that still exists today and be easy to communicate
with young people or else it will end up like replacing the normal uni-
form with ao dai in school. Hence, we were able to find different cultural
beauties many years ago, like stamps, Khan Van, ..etc, and we realized
that it is a pity if the young generation could not have a chance to learn
about their country’s old culture. For this reason, we - the nostalgic souls
will REPLAY the old stories about Vietnam in the 20th century with a
throughout-time witness - the radio to bring a retro vibe to our modern tools
as podcast and magazine, in order to easily access various generations.

HANNAH HANOI
The first English broadcast of
Voice of Viet Nam Radio. Her name
was Trinh Thi Ngo, but she renamed
herself Thu Huong-“The Fragrance of
Autumn”. there was a rumor calling
her the English name Hanoi Hannah.
She was the chief propaganda voice of
North Vietnam, through the radio she
called out to American soldiers in South
Vietnam over the airwaves, seeking to
persuade them that the war was unethi-
cal and that they should put down their
weapons and withdraw from the war.
At that time, people thought it was
a device for listening and recording,
but Hanah turned it into a weapon. She
aroused the invisible value of the radio
among the Vietnamese people. The ra-
dio becomes a tool to protect the home-
land of those who carry an endless desire
for peace but are unable to go to battle.

ing about a correct explanation of your

confused than to be ordered into a war
to die or to be maimed for life without
the faintest idea of what’s going on”

Her broadcasts were often exag-
gerated war coverage, provocation fresh
infantry to murder officier and go ab-
sent without leave, or hints that soldiers’
wives or girlfriends back home were
cheating on them. Mostly, she was met
with loud laughter. Can you imagine, it
actually happened, The enemy’s fighting
spirit and belief had become chaotic, en-
emy commander even had to publish a
law that didn’t allow their army to listen
to Hannah channel. A small lady with
a small radio can give out impressive
power, each word on that radio just like a
7mm bullet penetrating through an ene-
my heart.Another side of the radio is not
just only a mental weapon but also can
be a tool that helps remove all hatred,
connect nations and bring people hope
together, a hope for a peaceful future.
Not only that, in addition to her main
broadcast hours, Hannah also used radio
to transmit spiritual cheering songs for
soldiers on the battlefield. In the back
of the frontline, Hannah plays sweet
love songs for girlfriends and wives
of the soldiers, help them keep their
hearts, continue to wait for their man
return.
Let’s let bygones be bygones.
Let’s move on and be friends.
What Hannah has done with the
radio has reached farther than her name
and directly affects the Vietnamese pa-
triots, the soldiers, or even the children
and the elderly. The radio is respected
more than ever before. Because the radio
is the thing that protects their homeland,
brings love, entertainment and last but
not least the messenger that carries the
call for peace.

While cleaning my grandfather’s room, I
accidentally found his old radio inside a drawer.
Many years passed, the radio is not working an-
ymore, but he still carefully kept it, like the way
he cherished the simple values of ​​ time. Out of cu-
riosity, I took out the radio and asked my dad, at
first he didn’t say anything, just silently wiped the
little dust on the radio and stared at it for a long
time. After about 2 minutes of silence, he started
the story:
“During the subsidy period, around the
70s-80s, motorcycles, televisions, watches, radi-
os ... are luxury items that only wealthier families
can afford. The first radio was the one he bought
after a business trip abroad. At that time, only a
few families had a radio in the whole neighbor-
hood, so I was so excited and always showed off
to the neighbors kids.....

Grandpa cherishes the radio not only for
the entertainment it provides, but I know, he is
still grateful for it, because of the attachment
and intimacy throughout all the time. When
they heard the weather forecast on the radio
about a cold air coming, the grandparents be-
gan to prepare winter clothes and blankets to
get ready for a cold winter. Every dinner, the
whole family gathers together, enjoys the meal
while listening to daily news, entertainment,...
When I was a child, just like you now, because
I didn’t like the news, I always waited for him
to change the channel to the FM radio program
“Little Flowers” at 8pm. Listening to the radio
has its own fun, I just need the program’s mu-
sic to predict the time without having checking
the clock. For example, every 6 o’clock every
day is the signal music with the sound of the
radio announcer: “It is 6 o’clock”, 6:30 am on
Sunday morning is the program “Story in the
army camp”. Every Saturday night, the neigh-
bor’s come to our house to follow the program
“Warning Story” and “Broadcasting Theater”
broadcast on the radio”. Your Grandmother
sometimes brewed some green tea and roast-
ed a little peanuts for everyone to enjoy the
show together. Me and the other childrens also
gathered around the mat and did some naughty
things so we were often reminded by the adults
so that everyone could focus on the program...

A few years later, Grandpa went to
work in Russia and the gift he brought to us
was the radio. But the new thing is using mod-
ern technology, that is possible to use cassette
tape, it makes the sound clearer than the old
radio. Every time we insert a cassette tape,
we can listen to popular songs that we want
without having to depend on programs broad-
cast. There was a time when installing a cas-
sette tape, I was carelessly messing with the
tape and the radio let out a few strange noises.
I don’t remember what happened after that but
I was scolded by Grandpa because I damaged
the tape he loved the most.”
At this point, my dad suddenly stopped,
I could clearly see the tears on his face, maybe
because he missed Grandpa and missed those
old days. With who went through the subsidy
period, memories were just the simple pleas-
ures. I silently searched for an old cassette in
his cabinet and listened to it, it is true that lis-
tening to the radio always gives a very differ-
ent feeling from today’s entertainment media,
when every song can be downloaded by one
click, but in the old days, each cassette was
considered as a treasure. It is difficult for us,
the new generation, to understand and feel all
of that great value of time, thanks to the small
radio, it partly depicts and preserves the beau-
tiful cultural values of the Vietnamese people.
