Research Design:

Type and nature of study:

This study was carried using a mix of qualitative and quantitative research. Although it was more

inclined towards qualitative as we questioned the relevant people about their opinion on the

effect of COVID 19 on the job sector and specifically on the service management sector. As far

as the nature of study is concerned it was a causal research where COVID 19 was the causal

factor and its effect on the service management sector and the changes in career development

towards service management fields was being observed. The aim of the research was to obtain a

public opinion on the destruction and effects of the ongoing pandemic on different sectors

especially on the service management sectors. To evaluate the data, a literature review was

performed using journals, articles, books etc. [CITATION Hoq20 \l 1033 ]. The research shows that

COVID has significantly affected a lot of sectors including education, industry, real estate and

service management as well. We could come to a conclusion that one of the most affected sector

was service management as most of service industry includes physical interaction with customers

and clients.[ CITATION Hoq20 \l 1033 ] This affect caused a major change in career choices of

students and professionals as well and they had changed their career development path due the

effects of COVID 19. We also discussed and took their opinion on the financial and social effects

of COVID on the society as whole and also on different sectors individually like education,

industry, international business etc.

Sampling design:

The sampling design used in the research was Non-probability sampling. Some of the

respondents of the research did not have a clear idea about the exact effects of covid on service

management, therefore their opinion wasn’t included in the search. Most of the population were

business studies students from different of Karachi and some were professionals in the service

management sector. There were a total of 100 participants in the research. The students were

aged between 20 and 25 whereas the professionals were aged in the range of 28-35. Majority of

the participants were male whereas 35% of the participants were female. We made sure that the

participants included in the research were aware about the effects of COVID 19 and had enough

knowledge and awareness about the topic. Judgement sampling was used to include the answers

and feedback of the participants in the sample. We made it sure to the participants of the research

that the information will only be used for academic purposes. About 800 questionnaires were

received out of which we included 500 in the study on the basis of relevance.

Instruments:

Some questionnaires were sent to particular individuals in which there were certain

questions regarding the effects of COVID 19. Manual surveys and short interviews were

conducted with students from different universities in Karachi in which they were asked about

their knowledge and opinion on the topic. Some other instruments were used from other articles,

research papers and publically available data. Three of the instruments were used from [CITATION

Wen19 \l 1033 ]. There were a total of 30 questions in the questionnaire excluding the personal

information section. The link of the questionnaire on Google forms was shared on Facebook and

other platforms and was shared among students and other people who could give a proper insight

on the matter. We ensured that their consent was obtained on they were aware of the purpose of

the study. A focus group was also arranged in which the participants were aspirant of a service

management career. We also invited few individuals already in the service sector. The

participants discussed the topic. Our team observed their discussion and also took their opinions

individually and collectively as well.

Procedures of Data Collection:

Statistical Techniques:

The accuracy of the research was measured using explained variance proportion (R 2) where R2
was change in career choices towards service management was 0.628. A bootstrapping method
was used on the study by [CITATION Wen19 \l 1033 ] to test the hypothesis relationship. The
results showed that COVID 19 had a major effect on service management and career
development in the service management sector (β = 0.743, p < 0.01). The Q2 value was
0.349
