text.
STUDYING ABROAD Studying in foreign
countries is a big decision which can bring along a number of benefits, but it is not
without its challenges. This is why students need to thoroughly analyse the pros and
cons of studying abroad before making the final call. Before applying to a foreign
university, one should consider the disadvantages of studying abroad. First, a
student may feel lonely by being far from home and friends. Also, difficulty in
understanding a foreign language can be very disappointing and can affect the
student's grades. It can be very expensive to pay the costs of travel and housing
in a different country. Finally, if there is an emergency at home, it will be hard to get
home in a hurry. However, studying in another country is advantageous in many
ways. A student is exposed to a new culture. This culture teaches him or her
about other people and other ways of thinking, which can promote
friendships among countries. He can learn a new language which may be
beneficial for keeping up with research after the student has finished
studying. He can learn experience not available in his country. The student may
also get the opportunity to study at a university where a leading expert in his field
may be teaching. The leading expert can introduce the student to the most
up-to-date findings of the top researchers in the field. Exposure to such available
knowledge and insights into the field can aid the student in becoming
an expert as well. In short, every person may react to challenges in their own
way, so it is important to research the potential destinations and the
advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad in time. Not everyone
enjoys a dramatic change, but there are a number of benefits that
need to be taken into consideration when making the decision. Of
course, any change as big as going to live a while in another country is
sure to be accompanied by some challenges that need to be overcome.

Your English-speaking friend, Maria, sent you an email. Read part of her
email below.

I'd love to spend the summer working in your country. I think I could learn a lot!
Do you think it would help me improve my knowledge of your language? I have
some experience of summer jobs in supermarkets, and last year I worked in a
restaurant all summer. What summer jobs might be available in your area? I
would not expect to earn a lot of money, of course, but do you think I'd earn
enough to pay for my expenses?
Finally, if I get a job, would it be possible to stay in your
house? Please write me soon.

Write a reply to Maria, answering her questions. You

should write 150-200 words. You need to include your
name.

Question 1 (5 points): Read the following

text.
It is true that some famous people are known for their lifestyles rather
than for the work they do. While I agree that these celebrities set a bad
example for children, I believe that other famous people can act as
positive role models. On the one hand, many people do achieve fame
without really working for it. They may have inherited money from parents,
married a famous or wealthy person, or they may have appeared in gossip
magazines or on a reality TV programme. A good example would be Paris
Hilton, who is rich and famous for the wrong reasons. She spends her
time attending parties and nightclubs, and her behaviour promotes
the idea that appearance, glamour and media profile are more important
than hard work and good character. The message to young people is that
success can be achieved easily, and that school work is not necessary.
On the other hand, there are at least as many celebrities whose
achievements make them excellent role models for youngsters. Actors,
musicians and sports stars become famous idols because they have worked
hard and applied themselves to develop real skills and abilities.
They show
their great effort, determination and ambition, which is required for
someone who wants to be truly successful in their chosen field. An example
is the actor and martial artist Jackie Chan, who has become world famous
through years of practice and hard work. This kind of self-made
celebrity can inspire children to develop their talents through
hardworking practice. In conclusion, it seems to me that the influence of
celebrities on young people can be positive as well as negative.
