EXERCISES for Chapter 1 of Calculus 1 Dr Janet, Sem 1, 2021/22

At the end of each class, you will be told which exercises to attempt before the next class.
Try to write out your answers in detail, explaining each step.

1. For function f in Figure 1, state the slope of the graph at a) x = 1, b) x = 4, c) x = 7.

identifying the slope and y-intercept.) a) y = x + 2, b) y = 2x − 4, c) x + 2y = 3.
3. Biologists have observed that the chirping rate of a certain insect is linearly related to
temperature. At a temperature of 150 C, the insect produces 47 chirps per minute, and at
300 C produces 209 chirps per minute. a) Sketch a graph of the chirping rate as a function
of temperature, and find the equation of the line. b) State the slope of the line, including
its units, and explain its meaning to the biologists. c) If the insects are chirping at 236
chirps per minute, what is the temperature?
4. A certain furniture factory makes chairs. The total production costs, C, may be con-
sidered to be linearly dependent on the number of chairs produced, x. When the factory
produces 60 chairs, the total production costs are $550. For every 8 extra chairs produced,
the production costs increase by $52. a) Find an equation for the cost function (that is,
the production costs as a function of number of chairs produced). b) For $1000, how many
chairs can be produced?

5. State the domain and range of the function f (x) = 4 − 3x2 .
6. A rectangular box has sides of length x, 2x and 3x. Write formulae for a) the volume of
the box, b) the total surface area of the box, as functions of x.
7. For a sphere, find a formula for the surface area, S, as a function of the volume, V .
8. Consider a closed cylindrical can with volume 1 m3 . Find an expression for the total
surface area as a function of the base radius r.
9. Sketch an approximate graph of air temperature as a function of time on a typical day
in Ho Chi Minh City. (Consider a 24 hour period starting at midnight.)
10. Check that you can sketch the graphs of the following common equations √ from memory
– that is, without plotting points or other working: y = x2 , y = x3 , y = x, y = |x|,
1 1
y = , y = 2 , y = sin x, y = cos x, y = tan x, y = ex , y = ln x, x2 + y 2 = a2 .

11. Circle C is centred at (0, 2) and has radius 3. a) Sketch the circle. b) Write a function
y = f (x) for the lower half of the circle.

12. Is the given function is odd, even or neither? a) f (x) = xe−x , b) g(x) = x + cos x.
13. A car park charges $3 for a stay of up to 2 hours and an additional $1 for every
additional hour or part of an hour (so, for example, if you stay 2 hrs 3 mins or 2 hrs 47 mins
you will pay $4). Write a formula for the total cost C (in $) as a function of the parking time
t (in hours) for 0 < t < 5, and sketch the graph of C(t). [Hint: It is a piecewise function.]
14. Write a piecewise formula for the piecewise function shown in Figure 1 (above) and
state the domain and range of the function.
