CHEMISTRY FOR ENGINEERS

Semester 1: 2021-2022

Science vs. Engineering vs. Technology

• Science: to study of the physical world (pursuit of

knowledge)

• Engineering: to apply scientific knowledge to design

processes, structures or equipment.

• Technology: to create products that effectively solve

problems and improve human life.

Chemistry?
What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the science to study
• the properties, composition, and structure of matter,
• the changes matter undergoes, and
• the energy liberated or absorbed during those changes.

chemistry?
1. A requirement for your major
2. Chemistry directly affects our lives (chemistry
everywhere)
How does the human body work? How does aspirin cure our headaches? Do
steroids enhance athletic ability? Is table salt poisonous?
We are all chemically dependent (e.g., constant supply of oxygen, water, glucose
and a multitude of other chemicals)

3. A preparation for a good life

Through understanding of chemistry, you gain a powerful appreciation for

just how rich and extraordinary the world really is (Intrinsic)

Understanding chemistry makes you a more informed citizen – it allows

you to engage with many of the issues of our day (extrinsic)
• Is carbon monoxide (CO) harmful to our health?
• Does aluminum production affect our environment?
• Does hairspray cause holes in the ozone layer that will lead to global
warming?

We should understand chemistry

As engineers you are involved more in

chemistry for a better life and career

We should understand chemistry

NOT for what it can GET you but
for what it can DO for you
