COMO CULOTTES
BY KIMBERLY PAYNE OF STRAIGHT STITCH DESIGNS
The Como Culottes offer a cool, modern update to the
classic culotte. A flat waistband, inseam pockets and a side
zipper create a sleek silhouette while ample, deep pleats and
wide legs create drama and volume. Sew up a pair in warm
fabrics with ample drape.

INSTRUCTIONS

Print, tile and cut the pattern to your

size based on the size chart.

1. Mark pleat lines on wrong side of

all four pant pieces.

2. With right sides facing, match the

first two lines together and sew
the length of the line. Repeat for
second pleat (1).

3. Press the pleat so that half of the

fabric is on either side of the seam.
Baste the top of the pleat to hold 1 2
in place. Repeat for the three other
leg pieces.

4. Starting with the wearer’s right

front pant leg, place the pocket
piece along the side seam with
right sides facing. Match the
notches on the pocket with those
on the pant. Sew the pocket to the
pants between notches (2).

5. Press seam allowance towards the

pocket and understitch between
the notches. Repeat with back 3 4
right pant leg.

6. With right sides facing, match the

front and back right legs together
along the pocket and side seam.
Sew the pieces together from the
top edge to the notch; lock the
stitches in place. Then sew from
the bottom notch to the hem (3).

7. Sew the pockets together along

the outside edge, ending at the
stitch line from the previous step
(4).
5 6
8. With right sides facing, match the
front and back piece along the
inseam and sew together (5).

9. Working with the left front pant

leg, place the pocket piece right
sides together with notches
matching. Sew the pocket to the
pant leg between notches. Clip
from the side seam up to but not
through each notch (6).
10. Press seam allowance towards the 7 8
pocket and understitch between the
notches.

11. Flip the pocket towards the wrong

side and push the seam allowance of
both the pocket and pant leg above
and below the notches out (7).

12. Place the remaining pocket piece

right sides facing on the front pocket
piece. Pin in place and sew the
pocket pieces together along the
outside edge. Make sure not to catch
the pant leg in the stitching line.

13. Press both pocket pieces towards the

wrong side and baste through all
three layers above and below the
notch (8). 9 10

14. Baste the front and back leg together

from the notch to the bottom hem.
Baste the pocket pieces to the front
leg; repeat for other front leg piece
(9).

15. With right sides facing, match the left

front and back piece along the
inseam and sew together.

16. Turn one pant leg right side out and

slip inside the other pant leg. Match
up the center back (CB), center front
(CF) and crotch point.

17. Sew the pant legs together from CF

to CB (10).
11 12
18. With right sides facing, sew the front
and back waistband together along
one short end. Press the seam
allowance open. Fold the waistband
in half lengthwise and press. With
wrong sides up and the front
waistband to the right, fold the
bottom edge of the waistband up 1/4”
(11).

19. Match short end of the front

waistband with left side seam and the
unfolded edge of the waistband
along the pants upper edge. Pin in
place, matching up CF, CB and the
right side seam. Sew the waistband to
the pants along the top edge (12).
20. Before sewing the zipper, unpick the 13 14
basting stitch along the side seam 2”-
3” from the bottom notch.

21. With right sides facing, place the

zipper along the side seam of the left
pant leg. Line up the top of the zipper
teeth just below the pressing line on
the waistband. With the edge of the
zipper tape along the side seam, pin
the zipper in place.

22. Using an invisible zipper foot to stitch

the zipper as close to the teeth as
possible, sew the length of the zipper
to the pants (13). 15 16

23. To sew the other side of the zipper,

place the right side of the zipper on
the right side of the back pant piece.
Pin and sew the zipper per the other
side (14).

24. To sew the side seam of the pants,

place the pants right sides together
and pull the zipper tail out of the way.
Start sewing as close to the zipper as
possible. Sew all the way down the
side seam (15).

25. Fold the waistband toward the wrong

side along the pressing line. The
folded edge of the waistband will
cover the seam line from step 19. Pin
the waistband in place.

26. Working from the right side of the

pants, stitch the waistband facing in
place by stitching in the ditch
between the pants and the
waistband. Both short ends need to
be secured with either a topstitch
along the edge or hand stitched
closed (16).

27. Fold the pant leg towards the wrong

size 1/4” and then again by 1”. Press
well and topstitch 1/8” from the first
folded edge.
