 I. General tips:
 - Trọng âm của từ thường rơi vào nguyên âm đôi, hoặc
nguyên âm kéo dài:
 Có bao nguyên âm? 5 nguyên âm: a, e, i, o, u (ue oai)
+ Nguyên âm đôi: / ei / / ai /, / aʊ /, / ju /, / æ /, / eə / / əʊ /, …
+ Nguyên âm kéo dài: / a: /, / æ /, / i: /, / ɔː /, / u: / , /ɜː /, …
- Ví du: information; banana

 - Âm tiết yếu thường không nhận trọng âm:

(schwa) / ə /, ple, ow, ion, ry, ly, ful, less, er, or, en…

Tip 1. Hầu hết các danh từ và tính từ hai âm tiết có
trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất:

+ Two Syllable Nouns: children, hobby, habit, labor,

trouble, standard...
+ Two Syllable Adjectives: basic, busy, handsome, lucky,
pretty, silly,..
* Exception:
+ Two Syllable Nouns: exam, police, canal, parade,
disease, idea, museum, machine, advice,…
+ Two Syllable Adjectives: polite, severe, alone, abrupt,
amazed...

Tip 2. Hầu hết các động từ hai âm tiết có trọng
âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai:

+ Two Syllable Verbs: attract, begin, deny, forget,

enjoy, pollute, relax, provide, supply, refuse.
* Exception: (general tips)
+ Two Syllable Verbs: answer, enter, happen,
offer, open, borrow, follow, visit

 Tip 3. Đối với từ 3 âm tiết trọng âm có thể rơi vào:
+ âm tiết đầu: anyone, suitable, feasible, beautiful
+ âm giữa: computer, tomorrow, eternal, unfriendly
+ âm cuối: afternoon, Japanese, volunteer, engineer, cigarette

 Tuy nhiên, nếu chúng ta để ý thì từ 3 âm tiết, trọng âm rơi vào:

+ nguyên âm đôi: anyone, beautiful, computer, engineer
+ nguyên âm kéo dài: feasible, tomorrow, eternal, afternoon
+ từ gốc (không tính tiền tố và hậu tố): afternoon, suitable,
beautiful, unfriendly
* Tiền tố: re, dis, mis, un, non, anti, ex, pre, extra, im, il, ir, pro, post, …
• Hậu tố: -ment, -ship, -ness, -er/-or, -hood, -ing, -ise/-ize, -en,
-full, -less, -able,-ous, ly, ish,…

Tip 4. Những từ tận cùng bằng đuôi: ate, ise/ize và
đuôi ‘y’ (cy, ty, phy, fy, try, my, gy, thy) thì trọng âm
rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 tính từ sau ra trước:
+ Đuôi ‘ate’: educate, communicate
+ Đuôi ‘ise’/’ize’: exercise, industrialize
+ Đuôi ‘cy’: efficiency, redundancy
+ Đuôi ‘ty’: ability, community
+ Đuôi ‘fy’: certify, identify,
+ Đuôi ‘phy’: geography, photography
+ Đuôi ‘try’: chemistry, dentistry
+ Đuôi ‘my’: economy, autonomy
+ Đuôi ‘gy’: biology,
+ Đuôi ‘thy’: empathy, sympathy
• Exception: difficulty, accuracy, intimacy

Tip 5. Những từ tận cùng bằng đuôi ‘i…’ thì trọng âm rơi
vào âm tiết trước đó:

 ‘ity’: ability, stupidity

đuôi sau:
 - ain: entertain, maintain, retain

 - ade: lemonade, degrade, stockade, charade, grenade

 - ese: Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese
 - eer: career, engineer, volunteer, buccaneer
 - oo: kangaroo, shampoo, taboo, bamboo
 - oon: afternoon, cartoon, lagoon, typhoon
 - ette: suffragette, serviette, kitchenette
 - esque: grotesque, picturesque, humoresque
 - ique: unique, technique
* Exception: committee, coffee

 Tip 7. Đối với các danh từ ghép được viết liền nhau thì
trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất:

 airport, birthday, bookshop, gateway, guidebook,

filmmaker...
 check-up, check-in, dropout , breakdown, tryout,
walkout, …

 Tip 8. Một số tính từ ghép:
 Phần lớn có trọng âm chính rơi vào thành phần thứ nhất:
airsick, airtight, homesick, praiseworthy, trustworthy,
waterproof,…

 Các tính từ ghép có thành phần đầu tiên là tính từ hoặc

trạng từ và thành phần thứ hai tận cùng là -ed thì
trọng âm chính rơi vào thành phần thứ hai.
bad-'tempered, ˌshort-'sighted, ˌill-'treated, ˌwell-'done,
well-'known.
