INNOVATION FACTORS

PROCESS INNOVATION RESOURCES

INFRASTRUCTURE

 All elements/factors are equally important

 No innovation if one of these 4 elements missing
 Each element requires/supports each others expanding innovation
 Innovation by Design – defines innovation as invention plus
implementation / commercialization. Invention involves the process of
taking an idea and developing it into a concept.

CREATIVITY VERSUS INNOVATION

Creativity Innovation
 is the ability to think up and  is the introduction of something
design new inventions or things new – a new idea, method, things
 individual or devices.
(Purely Personal)  Whole Organization/Society
 ability to see something in a new (Purely Social)
way  can be clearly complex to introduce
something new

Ideas
Definition:
An idea is a form created by the consciousness (including mind)
by the process of ideation.
Further, ideas give rise to actual concepts or mind generalisations,
which are the basic for any kind of knowledge whether science
or philosophy.

 ideas are useless if no action taken to pursue them

 implementation of ideas requires some deep thinking
(require knowledge)
 an excellent product idea cannot be a market success without
the support of all other organizational function (authorities,
mass media and etc.)

How to generate ideas?

1.Imagination – Raw Ideas
2.Problems & Problem Solving
3.Group Discussion
4.Thinking Tools & Techniques
i. Brainstorming
ii. Changing Viewpoints
5.Knowledge
i. Trainings
ii. Classes

What is a Concept?

 A word, phrase or term expressing an idea

 An abstract or general idea, a mental model, a mental creation,

From Idea to Concept

Tasks to develop an idea into a concept:
1. Identifying the available resources.
2. Understanding the organizational infrastructure.
3. Accessing the competencies and capabilities of
the organization.
4. Interpreting economic and global demographic information.

Sketching and Drawing

3 most useful forms of a graphic depiction:
1. The Schematic
> Make use of standardized symbols to show equipment,
processes, chemical composition, mathematical relations
and etc.
2. The Perspective
> Is a representation of what the device would look like if it
were actually built and photographed.
3. Working Representation
> Is a planar representation of the object from one, two or
more sides and indicates details of construction.

Invention
 Invent something not exist
 Create new ideas and make it work
 Invention is not Science > it is process
 Not all inventions are patented
 The optimal solution is to have patents that add
value, significant value

Innovation
 Is not science or technology
 Creates new wealth rather than knowledge
 Turning an idea into a business success
 A change in the economic or social environment
 Must be User – Focused
 Is newness in the sense of not having done before

Sources of Innovation
What is the Sources of Innovation?

4 major consideration in innovative governed organization:

1. Understanding the innovator’s characteristics and working

relationship.
2. Integrating the organizational activities, functions and
discipline
3. Developing an environment that fosters innovation.
4. Managing from a systems perspective

Innovation Culture
 Different industries, different competencies and capabilities,
different motivations and different priorities.
 Organization successful depends on how innovation and success
were defined
 Failed innovation often provide starting point for
new innovation > lesson learn
 Innovation begins with a mental model > Culture & Environment is
important > Organizational should provide infrastructure that fosters
innovation.
 Innovation Culture = Support + Promote + Challenge

Summary
 Innovation depends on 4 major elements: Resources, Infrastructure
Culture & Process. All are equally important and need to be integrated
for successful innovation.
 Organization need to innovate immediately or need to pay the price
later. Innovation is not a matter of chance, but of choice.
 Innovation involves a continuum from ideas, to concepts, to invention,
to innovation.
 Innovation = Invention + Implementation/Commercialization
 Innovation must be nourished by a supportive culture.
 the innovation myths lie on the true-to-false continuum.
