Présent simple:

Present simple ou présent progressif?


● Le présent simple sert à exprimer une caractéristique, une action habituelle, quelque
chose de permanent, raconter une histoire drôle, donner un horaire de bus, train ou
avion.

EX: He works for Nespresso.


I come from Italy.
She goes to the gym every week.
A man goes into a bar…
The bus leaves at 8:00PM.

● Le présent progressif sert à exprimer une action en cours, une action temporaire, ou une
action à venir dans un futur très proche.

Comparez:

What do you eat for breakfast? What are you eating?

David lives in Nice. Paul is living in Mandelieu for the moment,

Paul works as a mechanic. Mary is working as an accountant right now.

Water boils at 100 degrees. Be careful! The water is boiling!

I see a doctor every year. I am seeing Ken and Mary tonight.

Les verbes suivants ne sont pas compatibles avec le présent progressif:


● les 5 sens: to hear (entendre)/ to see (voir)/to smell (sentir) to sound (sembler à l’oreille)
to taste (avoir le goût de…)

● Les verbes de croyance: to think/to believe/to suppose/to doubt


● Les verbes d’opinion et de goût: to like/to love/to hate/to prefer/to wish

● Les verbes d’activité mentale: to remember/to forget/to understand

● Les verbes d’appartenance: to belong/to consist of/to contain

● Les verbes d’apparence: To look like/to seem

● To cost (coûter)/to depend on (dépendre de)/to deserve (mériter)
