Just beyond Ka suga- no - Mon Gate
at the Universit y of Tok yo, a waving
façade of scale -like panels comes into
view. The building is run a s a research
center for ubiquitous computing, a
new f ield of study est ablished in the
universit y. Our aim wa s to change
the conventional image of universit y
campuses in Japan, occupied by hard
materials a s concrete , stone and met al.
We hope that the texture of wood and
mud in this building can sof ten the
atmosphere of the universit y.

Wa shoku is now a designated Int angi-
ble Cultur al Herit age , and the world’
s interest in Japanese food is ever
increa sing. Kayanoya is a renowned
manufacturer of shoyu (soy sauce),
da shi (soup stock) and other sea son-
ings that form the ba sis of Japanese
cuisine. We revived this Kyushu - ba sed
soy sauce brewer y in this Nihonba shi
shop. Koji but a (rice malt tr ay) is used
throughout the display of the shop,
a s well a s wooden bucket s, all made
of local Kyushu cedar. They were also
hand - made by cr af t speople of Kyushu,
a s an introduction for the customers to
tr aditional Japanese ar t and sk ill.

We worked on the façade of this
building. It features tenderness and
smoothness of nature. The aluminum
louvers can be multi-angled and
decided by computer calculation, in
order to control the amount of solar
energ y coming in so it would reduce
the load on ventilation. The entr ance
hall is a subtly nuanced space with re -
interpret ation of tr aditional element s
such a s a lat tice grid and wa shi.

Discussion on preser ving old buildings
tends to end up in keeping all or noth -
ing. With KIT TE we aimed at a cohabit a-
tion of the old and new. The ea st side
of the atrium ret ains the fr ame from the
old post of f ice building designed by
Tet suro Yoshida . We dyed the fr ame to
white , and exposed it to highlight the
structure in a line. The t wo sides facing
each other are equipped with gla ss
handr ails, on which mirrors in 10 mm
width are printed, so that they could
ref lect par t of the old building in the
space.

A s the rest aur ant is in the ba sement
of Tok yo St ation’s M arunouchi side, a
nationally designated impor t ant prop -
er t y a sset , we planned the space with
themes of layering dif ferent periods.
We chose a white polyester cloth a s to
express this layering, since it holds a
feeling of texture and semi-tr anspar-
ency. When layered, a k ind of moire is
born and the cloth grows into a new
ambiguous texture , creating“ fog g y
air”in the space. It also present s a
solid feel by being combined with hard
materials a s met al, gla ss and wood.

This sushi shop ha s been long popular
in the Shinba shi district . In this par-
ticular rest aur ant in Tok yo’s high end
M arunouchi area , guest s can enjoy the
delicate t a ste of sushi in a warm and
tr anquil set ting , with themes of light ,
stone and wind.

Tif fany Ginza is the refurbishment of
an old nine -stor y building. We took it
a s an architectur al work , r ather than
a revision of the exterior. One big
feature is the a ssembly of 292 faceted
panels, all made of gla ss and aluminum
honeycomb, inser ted into the gap
bet ween the existing building and the
proper t y line. The panels are arr anged
in dif ferent angles so they tr ansmit
and r adiate light like an intricately
cut diamond, which symbolizes the
jewelr y of Tif fany.

Kabuk i is one of the most popular
per forming ar ts of Japan, and its histor y
dates back more than 30 0 years, to the
er a of Edo. Kabuk i’s f irst purpose -built
theater wa s erected in 1890, when peo -
ple in Meiji period were busy catching
up with culture from the West . Having
gone through a couple of reconstruc-
tions since then, the new Ginza Kabuk iza
opened in the spring of 2013 a s its f if th
theater. KK A A’s design maint ains the at-
mosphere of the four th iter ation, which
held long-felt familiarit y, and used par ts
and materials from the previous building
a s much a s possible. While the high-rise
building connected to the back of the
theatre f inancially sust ains the running
of k abuk i, sever al new spaces and facili-
ties were also added to this f if th theatre.
The pla za in front of the building, res-
t aur ant s and shops in the ba sement , and
arcade to the shopping street at the side
of the theater all revive an atmosphere of
shibai-machi – theater-lovers’gathering
point in Edo period. The building is also
fully equipped a s an evacuation center in
disa sters.

Juget sudo is run by an old nori shop
who sell wholesale to a high - cla ss sushi
rest aur ant in Tok yo. They also sell Japa-
nese tea s and cakes, and opened a café
in Paris sever al years before this one.
Juget sudo Ginza is located at Kabuk iza
facing the roof-top garden, and the
space of 120㎡ in area is covered with
up to 3,0 0 0 bamboo pieces. The room
is quietly divided by bamboo screens
(their spacing is all dif ferent), and
the ceiling is folded to be connected
natur ally to the eave thrusting to the
garden.

The building is located in the
neighborhood of Kabuk iza , which ac-
commodates rest aur ant s , of f ices and
residences. Stepping into the building,
visitors are ushered into a long f light
of st airs stretching to 30 m. It wa s de -
signed with the idea of tiered seating,
which functions not only for a scending
and descending, but also a s an open
space for the public.

This is a new t ype of housing for rent-
ing, developed by Urban Renaissance.
Human -scaled roji (shor t and narrow
pa ssages) were created to enhance
communications among the resident s,
and the house unit s cater to a SOHO -
t ype f lexible life st yle , which in fact
wa s the feature of the tr aditional
Japanese house.

tol”came from the parliament building

tr aditional Japanese wooden architec-

“A living room in the big cit y”is the
concept of this museum. Why a living
room? Cities have been increa singly
“interiorized”nowadays, with the ad -
vanced technolog y in communications
and tr anspor t . Dist ances bet ween
things have disappeared, directing the
entire cit y towards inner rooms in a
big house. In that house , there are lot s
of corridors and dining rooms, but not
much of space where people can rela x .
In the Suntor y Museum, time pa sses
slowly, and visitors t ake their time with
the exhibited ar t work . M aterials here
are all human -friendly, and lighting is
designed carefully to be a s sof t a s pos-
sible.

Lucien Pellat- Finet is k nown a s the
“k ing of ca shmere ,”and what he
wanted from our collabor ative project
wa s a feeling of Japanese space using
natur al materials, acceler ated also by
the sof tness of ca shmere. It progressed
like weaving one piece of cloth. In
order to represent the sof tness of the
fabric , we adopted ply wood for struc-
ture , of ten used for the foundation of
a building. This common material wa s
carefully cut a s if it could dr aw cur ves,
then they were laid out evenly from the
end of the space to express an organ -
ized Japanese room.

B aiso -in wa s est ablished in 16 43 to
commemor ate the death of Aoyama
Yoshinari, a va ssal of Tokugawa Fam -
ily who reigned throughout the Edo
Period. The address Minami (south)
Aoyama , also comes from Aoyama’
s mansion previously existing in this
place. The temple wa s once a com -
munit y center for the local people , and
B aiso -in wa s designed to revive that
function, equipped with a ceremony
hall, educational facilities, and an
apar tment house. It is a model of an
urban temple of our time. The archi -
tectur al feature is the roof, with met al-
plates arr anged like f ins to create a
shadowed landscape in it s vicinit y.
23 ESCORTER AOYAMA

This is a renovation of NT T’s Aoyama
B uilding. Since the site is approachable
both from the national road 246 and
the street to the Jingu - mae st adium, we
made a wide pa ssage for walkers, with
a roof made of FRP (f iber reinforced
pla stic) gr ating. Light is subtly changed
toward green, like the shadow of leaves
ref lected on the ground in a forest , and
on the f loor, wood pieces are inser ted
in the gaps of the gr ating for smooth
footing.

The histor y of the museum dates back
to 1914, when Nezu Kaichiro, a great
industrialist (founder of a r ailway com -
pany) and politician of Meiji est ablished
the building in an extensive site of his
own residence. They t ake pride in one
of the richest collections of Japanese
and Eastern ar t s in A sia , a s well a s their
Japanese garden abundant in green,
with a couple of tea houses erected here
and there. The current building opened
in 20 09 a s the new house to exhibit
their work s, along with renovation of
some par t of the old museum. Given the
location̶now one of the busiest shop -
ping street s in Japan̶we designed a
gr adual change from the bustling street
to the quiet forest in the museum.
The building is loosely open up to
out side , instead of being surrounded
by blind walls, by an approach through
a bamboo thicket . Visitors are ushered
into the museum under the bamboo
and deeply overhanging roof, changing
directions a s they do in the roji of a
teahouse.

Pineapple cake is the original Taiwan-
ese sweet , and Sunny Hills is one the
most popular manufacturers to open
a shop in Japan. B oxes of cakes using
organically-grown pineapples are sold
in the shop. Sunny Hills wanted a place
like a living room in this residential
area , so our idea wa s to put up a forest
in the town. We developed jigoku gumi
(tr aditional wood fr aming of Japanese

the essence of modern Japanese living ,

features a simple inter vention with tr a-
ditional Japanese materials, conf igured
in such a way a s to ref lect domestic
spaces, and interpreted in new ways.

At the peak of the open slope , there is
a main building of a shrine in a primi-
tive form of roof ing and pillars. The
gentle slope t akes your body gr adually
to the highest point , and through the
shrine , we wanted to create a sense of
liber ation in that natur al precinct . The
exterior of the main house is made of
plain wood in a lat tice grid to control
it s relation with out side. The roof ing is
so - called yamato - buk i in steel plates,
where t wo sheet s are arr anged alter-
nately.

Shincho -sha is one of Japan’s big gest
publishing companies. We conver ted
their old warehouse to a pla za , a café
and a shop. A s the site wa s slightly
sloped, we provided an organic-
shaped pla za covered with wooden
deck , so that the local people could
use it a s their gathering spot . Inside
the warehouse , we exposed the old
delicately- designed steel structure
and preser ved book shelves in steel, to
be reused by the new shop.

The design theme for this museum in
the center of Tok yo consisted of adopt-
ing a unique roof design to blend the
interior space with the garden. The
interior display space wa s made integr al
with the garden by providing large
gla ss openings in an at tempt to merge
the garden, building and ar t work .
Surrounded by a verdant garden and
featuring a bamboo lined approach, the
focus wa s to create spiritual ar t space
that provides a respite from the hustle
and bustle of the cit y.

interior emerged, where form becomes

wall painting by Teruhiko Yumur a .

Tok yo Universit y of A griculture wa s
est ablished in 1925 a s the f irst private
school for agriculture. The museum
exhibit s not only it s histor y but also
tr aditional farming equipment and
sake wares, a s well a s host s event s
related to food. To open up the mu -
seum widely to the communit y, we
used a shino stone louvers to connect
the building with the Keyak i avenue in
front of the site.

A s a renewal event of Tamagawa
Tak a shima-ya Depar tment Store, which
celebr ated it s 4 0 th anniversar y, we
designed cloud -like organic eaves. It
is a medium to connect the building
and the green. The pilotis extends a s
long a s 14 0 m, and there we inser ted
168 sheet s of aluminum all in dif ferent
shapes. Each panel is holed in 4 0 mm
diameter, and spaced at 8 0 mm, to bal -
ance lightness and streng th.

shopping center and the urban envi-

light and abstr act . We got rid of the
conventional structure of bone and
sk in and designed the sk in to st and on

Ar tist M a sanari Mur ai (1905 -1999) is a
pioneer of the modernist painting in
Japan, and the museum displays many
of his impor t ant work s and own atelier.
To commemor ate his bir th, the mu -
seum opened in 20 0 4 a s the conversion
of his residence that he built in 194 0 s.
Our idea wa s to design it like st acked
boxes, called oju in Japanese , a s a
lunch box (small box inside a big one).
It is a lunch box realized a s a space.
The room used by Mur ai wa s kept a s
it wa s, and timbers from his old house
reappear a s louvers on the exterior
of the building. Using these louvers,
the spaces in bet ween express gaps
bet ween his time and the present .

The school (at t ached to Teik yo Univer-
sit y) is located in Tama district , one of
the major suburbs of Tok yo, abundant
in green and rich natur al environment .
The cit y’s large -scale apar tment com -
plex from the 1960 s, k nown a s Tama
New Town, drew at tention from the
world a s a symbol of Japan’s high eco -
nomic grow th. We created a wooden
school building in modern st yle , which
could best match this surrounding.
Wood is empha sized throughout
the whole structure, in the big roof,
exterior and interior. The roof changes
it s leng th and height according to the
activit y t ak ing place underneath, and
is merged well with nature.

Tak aosan (Mount Tak ao) is Tok yo’s
spiritual spot in the west . The st ation
building is now under construction
for renovation. It is k nown a s a sacred
ground of mount ain worship, so we
wanted to treat the st ation not just
a s the node of tr anspor t , but also a s
the boundar y bet ween the sacred and
people’s daily activities. The big wood -
en roof is the way to realize it . Par t s
and materials from old houses in the
area are recycled and applied to the
interior of the st ation a s a reminder of
the pa ssage of time.
