Measuring the Heat Capacity of an Engine Coolant

24 June 2020

Lab #2 Lab Report

Objective:

Compare a new engine coolant's heat capacity and specific heat capacity quantitatively, to see

how it compares its specific heat capacity with the currently used ethylene glycol engine coolant.

Procedure:

Methold 1

- Change the Bunsen Burner to 0.1 kJ/s and place Compound Y on top of

the Burner.

- Set timer and record temperature every 10 seconds

Method 2

- Get Compound Y to 80-90 ℃

- Put water into Compound Y

- Make sure you record the temperature

Results:

Method 1

Heating time (s) Heat in Joules Temperature (℃)

10 1000 26.5
20 2000 27.2
30 3000 28.1
40 4000 29.1
50 5000 30.1
60 6000 31.1
70 7000 32

DI Water 65.00 63.44 25.00 ℃
Compound Y 100.00 278 91.52 ℃
Final 77.8 ℃

Summary:

Surprisingly, the average heat capacity between method 1 and method 2 is 3.63.

The percent deviation -0.01907.

Conclusion:

In method 1 there was a specific heat capacity of 3.60 J/g℃ and method 2 was 3.67 J/g℃. When

water was added the specific heat of compound Y increased. Method 2 is bound to get larger

results compared to those of method 1. The rate is 0.07 J/g℃. The results are indeed higher than

ethylene glycol.

Post Lab Questions:

1) Heating 12.0 g of a compound with 350. joules of heat causes the temperature to increase

from 25 0C to 42 0C. Determine the specific heat capacity of the compound.

2) In a virtual garage, 25.0 g of metal shavings at 175 0C is dropped in a bucket containing 390.

mL of water at 23.0 0C. The final temperature of water and metal is 39.9 0C. What is the specific

heat capacity of the metal? Water has a specific heat capacity of 4.18 J/g0C and density of 1.00

g/mL. Heat capacity of the bucket is negligible and is adiabatic.

3) In a virtual kitchen, a cup of coffee at 27 0C containing 8 ounces of coffee is reheated in a

microwave oven providing 200 W of microwave heating power for 1.5 minutes. What is the final

temperature of the coffee? Assume the coffee density is 1.0 g/mL and its specific heat capacity is

4.18 J/0C. The heat capacity of the cup in this kitchen is 0.50 J/0C. 1 ounce = 29.57 mL.
