4.4 Manual zero offset compensation

The manual zero offset compensation prevents the falsification of
results, which could be caused by deposits of products on the
weighing conveyor or its supporting base.

HINT
In automatic operating mode, as soon as a gap in the product stream is
recognized, the zero offset compensation (auto tare) takes place
automatically. This is indicated by an asterisk at the lower left corner of the
weight display on the touch screen. If it does not take place within a 15
minute period, a warning message is given. This is considered to be a fault,
hence the machine is stopped. If after the 15 minutes it is still not possible
to perform an automatic zero offset compensation, then a manual zero
offset compensation must be carried out.

The weighing conveyor must be cleared before the manual zero

offset compensation can be done. The conveyor belts must be in a

11 Maintenance
All work involved with the maintenance of this machine may only be
performed by qualified staff.
Maintenance work and inspections should be performed within the
stipulated schedule.
Perform a safety check after every general maintenance service (see
chapter SAFETY FEATURES).

DANGER
Danger from electrical current.
For this reason, every time maintenance work is performed check the
following items: Disconnect the power supply to the machine. Turn the
master switch to the OFF position.
Secure the main switch with the padlock.
Exception:
In the exceptional case when maintenance requires a momentary power up
or a start up of the machine e. g., to connect or disassemble a safety
feature, a restricted zone of at least one meter around the machine must be
established.

Maintenance

11.1 Cleaning the checkweigher

HINT
Never use compressed air to clean the machine. You may only vacuum the
machine.
If a cleaning agent or solvent is used to clean the machine or parts of the
machine:
Be aware that some cleaning agents may react with your product surface
and can destroy it or raise the toxicity level, etc.
Only use suitable cleansing agents. Check the instructions on the
packaging to make sure that they are appropriate.
After any cleaning of the machine always perform a manual zero offset
compensation (see chapter INSTALLATION / MANUAL ZERO OFFSET
COMPENSATION).

As a first step, vacuum the machine.

Then clean the conveyor belts.
Remove any product deposits which may have built up between the
Weigh Cell and the weighing belt.

Maintenance

11.3 Changing the conveyor belt

ATTENTION
Before changing the conveyor belt, turn off the machine, set the master
switch to OFF and secure the position with the padlock to prevent
accidental power connection.

HINT
Perform a manual zero offset compensation after completing any
maintenance work at the weighing conveyor (see chapter INSTALLATION /
MANUAL ZERO OFFSET COMPENSATION).

HINT
The conveyor belts are subject to wear and tear. To avoid any unnecessary
downtime of the machine, make sure that you have a stock of conveyor
belts.
Never use force when removing or installing a new weighing belt. To avoid
damaging the Weigh Cell, it should be installed without the use of tools.

Unscrew the nuts of the connecting plug and disconnect it from the
motor.
Unscrew the four quick-action fasteners to be found on the sides of
each of the conveyor belts. Remove the conveyor belt fasteners.
Slacken the conveyor belt by turning the two straining screws for the
guide roller.
Lift the conveyor belt out carefully. Position the new belt on the
driving wheel, and secure the belt.

HC-M checkweigher / 25.01.2012 Page 133 / 186

Maintenance

HINT
Remember to tighten the new belt equally from both sides, otherwise it will
drift off to one side. When properly installed, the belt is positioned at the
center of the roller.
Only tighten the belts by hand. The belt tension is correct when the belt is
lying flat.

The installation of the new belt is performed in the reverse order to

the steps described above.

Troubleshooting

12 Troubleshooting
If a malfunction occurs when the machine is running, the machine will
perform the selected faulty action automatically, see chapter THE
SETTINGS MENU / DEFINITION OF FAULTY ACTIONS MENU.
Depending on the faulty action, the machine is stopped or the
machine cannot be started due to the malfunction.
The malfunction is indicated through a malfunction message in the
status line on the touch screen.
After a warning message has appeared in the status line, it is
acknowledged automatically by an auto-quit-mode and listed into the
error log book.
The same applies to error messages that do not cause a stop of the
machine. Error messages are also - like warning messages -
acknowledged automatically by the auto-quit-mode and listed into the
error log book.
After an info message appears in the status line, it is listed into the
error log book and then it has to be acknowledged manually by the
user in the error log book. Pending info messages are indicated by
the flashing error log book button.
Error messages that cause a stop of the machine are remaining in the
status line and have to be acknowledged manually by the user after
eliminating the fault. In operation mode "Error" error messages that
cause a stop of the machine can be acknowledged by the main
function button "Quit".
The malfunction message on the touch screen must disappear after
being acknowledged. The main function button changes to the button
START. The machine is operational and can be started again.
The error messages shown, are represented in such a fashion to
make them easily recognizable.
Immediately confirm any arising malfunctions!
The following pages show an extract of the most common error
messages which may occur. Depending on the equipment of the
machine and the way in which it is used, other error messages may
be shown on the touch screen.

B.2 Operation on the machine

Every printout, generated automatically or manually, is stored to the
machine in form of a XML file. The XML files contain of an internal
identifier that shows if the XML file was exported to USB storage
before or not.
At most 1000 not exported XML files are stored to the machine. As
soon as the limit of 1000 is exceeded, the oldest XML files
automatically are overwritten internally.
If less than 50 printouts (from 950 not exported XML printouts) are
available an error message is displayed for each printout that the
stored XML files should be exported. The remaining number of
possible printouts without data loss is displayed. Furthermore, the
used and free memory capacity is displayed graphically for each
export.

B.2.1 Create print data

A printout of the displayed parameters, data etc. can be created for

B.3 Data analysis with a PC

The XML file consists of the exported print data of the machine in
form of a structured text. Information about displaying the print outs is
not included. Layout definitions for formatting these structured data is
included in the stylesheet. The stylesheet includes specifications
about markup (font type, font size, font colour, etc.). Also, the placing
and size of the logo is defined with the stylesheet.
To achieve a correct displaying and to print out these XML files
 the XML file,
 the image file image01.jpg and
 the XLS stylesheet (optimized for Internet Explorer 5)
have to lie in one folder on the PC.

HINT
The image file and the XLS stylesheet are written to an USB storage during
the export - if not already existing.

The XML files can be displayed and printed via the standard menu
functions with a popular web browser. Displaying or editing is
possible with Microsoft Excel.
The PDF files can be viewed for analyses with popular standard
software, e. g. Adobe Reader.

Optional mean value feedback controller

C Optional mean value feedback controller

C.1 General
Optionally the machine can be equipped with a function for the
automatic feedback control of a filling machine.
In order to use this function the machine will have to be equipped with
a special cabling for the mean value feedback control; the machine is
programmed with the necessary parameters.
The following chapter contains the description of the mean value
feedback controller function as well as all necessary setting
parameters.

C.2 Mean value feedback controller function description

The mean value feedback controller is used for the control of long-
wave weight deviations in the current production. These deviations
could be caused by e. g. modification of the specific weight of a
product, or the modification of product ingredients or by alterations on
the filling machine.
Deviations from the target weight are registered by the machine and
can be allocated to the respective filling head.
The mean value feedback control works independent from the set
sorting limits.
The mean value is calculated by a user-defined number of individual
products. This mean value is compared to the target weight. The
system deviation is balanced against the controller amplification and
outputs an actuating signal to the filling machine, i. e. the controller
deviation will influence the filling amount of the filling machine in a
negative or positive way.
The control signals to the actuators of the filling heads are time driven
(pulse width modulation).

Optional mean value feedback controller

C.3 Set mean value feedback control

The following parameters will have to be set for the mean value
feedback control function:
 Control limit upper outer
 Control limit upper inner
 Control limit lower inner
 Control limit lower outer
 Type of control
 Control factor sec/g
 Number of count products
 Number of non-count products
 Use minimal and maximal control

C.3.1 Filler menu, general parameters

parameters of the filler menu.
Procedure:

1) Select settings menu

2) Select modules menu
3) Select filler menu
4) Select parameter menu
5) Select general parameters input menu or logical outputs of the

Optional mean value feedback controller

C.3.1.1 Parameter for mean value feedback controller

The following chapter describes the individual parameters of the

mean value feedback controller.

Controller limits upper / lower inner ( inner tolerance

band)

The inner tolerance band specifies a weight range near the target
value. If the mean value of the count products is within this specified
weight range, no filling head correction is effected.
The inner tolerance band must be smaller than the outer tolerance
band.

Controller limits upper / lower o ut er (outer toler ance

band)

The outer tolerance band specifies a weight range near the target
value. If the currently measured weight value exceeds the outer
tolerance band, it will not be used for the mean value determination
(maverick treatment).
The outer tolerance band must be larger than the inner tolerance
band.

Type of control

This parameter describes the form the controller signal is sent to the
filler. You can distinguish between time, impulses or serial. For
standard applications this parameter is preset with "Time" or
"Impulses".

Control calculat ion

This parameter describes the calculation of the control signal. The

value "Dev. wght." is preset by default.

Filling head control factor +/ -

The parameter describes the factor for manual adjustment (+/- key in
the filler graphic) that is used for the filling head, if the control was
offset far from the target value.
The value depends on the preset "d" of the scale!
Example:
d = 0.2g x factor 1 = adjustment of 0.2g for an one-time pressing of
the +/- key

Page 176 / 186 HC-M checkweigher / 25.01.2012

Optional mean value feedback controller

Control fact or sec/g or impulses/g

This parameter is a machine specific proportional parameter. It

indicates the operating time of the filling head actuator, to alter the
filling amount by a specific value. The unit is [sec/g] or [impulses/g].
This parameter is in correlation with the selection during configuration
of the parameter "Regulating type".
Selection of parameter "Regulating type" time refers to parameter
"Control factor sec/g"
Selection of parameter "Regulating type" impulses refers to
parameter "Control factor impulses/g"
Example: Parameter "Regulating type" time and parameter "Control
factor sec/g"
In order to increase / decrease the current filling amount by 10
gramme the filling head actuator will have to operate 2 seconds.
The parameter Regulating time per g is calculated for this example as
follows:

Control on

The control can be switched on or off with this parameter.

Count products

A mean value of all measurements is determined via the count

products by the mean value feedback controller. The respective
reaction of the controller is based upon this mean value.

Non-count products

Products which are between filling location and scale are described
as non-count products. Weight values for the mean value
determination are only considered after a number of non-count
products have passed. The number of products between filling
location and scale will have to be determined clearly and will have to
be checked after each change of product.
If the exact number of products between filling location and scale is
unknown, we recommend to choose a value larger by 1 or 2 in order
to avoid an over- or underfilling of the first products.

HC-M checkweigher / 25.01.2012 Page 177 / 186

Optional mean value feedback controller

Allowance

The parameter Allowance in the article menu indicates the difference

of the mean value feedback control target value to the nominal
weight. It is necessary to overfill the products beyond the nominal
weight for reasons of filling tolerances.

Use minimal and maximal control

The usage of the minimal an maximal control can be switched on or

off with this parameter.
Explanation minimal control filler
The "Min. control filler” is a measure for the required reaction time of
the actuator up to the actual control moment. It is a machine-specific
measure of the actuator (e. g. mechanical: clearance of bearing) and
balances its delay. If the regulating time is too short, the "Min. control
filler” ensures a minimum activation time of the actuator to guarantee
for the control.
The "Min. control filler” is indicated in seconds.
Explanation maximal control filler
This parameter defines the maximum regulation step of the mean
value feedback controller. It was implemented to prevent an extreme
re-adjustment of the filling machine in case of an error of the
feedback control.
The "Max. control filler” is indicated in seconds.

HINT
If these parameters are not displayed in the article menu (article
parameters), these values (excepting allowance) are preset for all articles
centrally in the FILLER MENU / GENERAL PARAMETER menu.

The elements in the filler graphic are described below:

Green bar:

Mean value of total number of count products is within inner control

limits and no filler correction will be performed.

Red bar:

The mean value of the total number of count products is beyond the
outer control limits (mavericks). So called mavericks are not used for
the mean value determination.

Am ber bar:

Mean value of total number of count products is between inner and

outer control limits, i. e. the filler will be corrected according to the set
control parameters.

Gray bar:

Hatched bars reflect the number of set non-count products and will
not be counted against the mean value determination after a filler
correction was performed.

TIP
Should the filling process operate far from the target weight, use the +/-
symbols to manually correct the filler.
After a manual correction wait until the set number of non-count products
has passed before initiating a new action/operation.
