Burners Performance &

Characteristics

All gas burners are designed to provide:

1. Complete combustion
2. Stable flame
3. Quiet operation
4. Rapid carryover of the flames.
5. Uniform heating
6. Immediate ignition
7. Wide turn down ratio

Complete combustion:

• A gas burner must be capable of mixing gas and air together so that the fuel is completely
burned.
• Combustion should not create carbon monoxide or other harmful products
• Harmful product must be maintained at minimum levels (co, aldehydes etc)

Stable flame:

• At proper input a burner should produce stable flames

• The flame should stay close to the burner and not lift off
• There should be no flashback
• Flashback occurs when a flame front moves back through a burner nozzle and sometimes
back into the air gas mixing point while the burner is firing

Quiet Operation:

• Burner must ignite quietly at ignition and while firing during the cycle.
• Loud burners can lead to customer complaints

Rapid carryover of the flames:

• When ignited the gas burner flame must pass smoothly and rapidly over the burner
surface
• On burners equipped with ports, it must pass smoothly form port to port with not delay
• All ports must ignite

Uniform heating:

• A burner must provide uniform heating across its surface

• Uneven heating can cause stress on a heat exchangers and boiler heating tubes and may
cause premature rupture

Immediate ignition:
• There should be no delay or hesitation in burner ignition
• When burner fail to ignite properly this is referred to as a delayed ignition
• Care must be taken by technicians when lighting any burner

Wide turndown ratio:

• Often referred to as the range of input for satisfactory combustion
• Some burners operate at fixed inputs; while other varies there inputs from low fire to
high fire or anywhere in between.
• A turndown ratio of 5 to 1 means a burner can vary its input from 20 % of the rating plate
to 100 % stamped on the rating plate.
• Many appliance vary their firing rates while still using the same burner

Note: all burners must be cleaned as per manufacturer’s instructions.
