Title: GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF AFES

1 PURPOSE

This document describes the Automatic Fire Extinguishing system (AFES) to be included in SG 4.X platform as
an optional.

2 SCOPE

WTG of SG 4.X platform that AFES is includes like an optional.

3 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This extra system is compatible with the passive protection fireproof blankets placed in the transformer room
and the fireproof fabric behind converter cabinet.

This integrated solution consists in two different and independent modules, one that covers the nacelle &
transformer room and the other one for the nacelle electrical cabinets.

1) Nacelle & transformer room module:

• Continuous aspirating circuits for smoke detection in the nacelle room and transformer room. (Fig.8,
Fig.9 and Fig.10; yellow colored).
• Perforated tubes for detection are located in the key air flow exits (in front of the internal coolers in the
case of the nacelle (Fig.1) and in front of transformer motor fan above the transformer room (Fig.2).
• Visual and acoustic alarm in case of detection (Fig.7).

2) Cabinets module:

• Continuous aspirating circuits for smoke detection inside all cabinets placed in the nacelle (stator,
converter and distribution cabinet). (Fig.8, Fig.9 and Fig.10); green colored)
• Perforated tubes for detection are located above converter cabinet air flow exits. (Fig.3)
• Perforated capillary tubes (Fig.4) are located in front of all air flow exits, inside all nacelle cabinets.
• Visual and acoustic alarm in case of detection (Fig.7).
• Extinguishing system (Fig.8, Fig.9 and Fig.10; red colored) for all cabinets placed in the nacelle which
connect a set of fire extinguisher cylinders (Fig.6) to the discharge nozzles (Fig.5) installed inside each of
the electrical cabinet.

Title: GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF AFES

Both modules depend on a central intelligent unit (additional cabinet to be placed inside the nacelle (Fig.7))
responsible of managing the previous units and connect to the Nacelle PLC. This unit includes a high-efficiency
aspirating smoke detector classified as very early warning smoke detector that can reliably detect fire at an early
stage. This smoke detector read continuously air samples from thanks to the aspirating circuits. In case of a fire
is detected this unit will be responsible of sending alarms to the PLC to control turbine stoppage, activate
optical-acoustic alarms and in case the risk of fire is inside the cabinets activate the extinguishing system
immediately by discharging an innocuous extinguishing agent.

Title: GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF AFES

The main benefits of this system are:

• Early fire detection which covers the greatest number of potential fire risks in the nacelle of the wind
turbine.
• Easily integration inside the nacelle with minor modifications in the hardware and software The AFES
system should preferably be installed in nacelles assembly plants although it can also be installed on
the wind farm as a retrofit with several modifications. It is supplied in kits with pre-manufactured
components that are easily installed.
• The extinguishing agents reaches every part inside the electrical cabinets, extinguishing the fire by
suffocation, cooling and chemical reaction.
• The extinguishing agent, NOVECTM 1230, is a clean agent, harmless for people, respectful with the
environment, non-corrosive and electrically non-conductive that does not produce any waste after the
discharge. Due to these characteristics this type of fluid agent is highly recommendable for the
extinction of fire inside electrical cabinets.
• The system includes a battery protection unit which enables the supply of electrical power during a
minimum period of 10 minutes of disconnection from the power supply source.
• The standard version of the kit works in a range of temperatures between -20 ºC and +50 ºC. but could
be adapted to work from -30ºC.
• The AFES system integrates components with the approvals required in the fire protection sector (UL,
CE, VdS, EN-54,..) and is in line with CE marking and DNV-GL
