Chocolate Facts
We think nothing of picking up a bar of chocolate and eating it, but where exactly does
chocolate come from? Chocolate is made from the seeds of the cacao tree, which are dried,
cleaned and then roasted. It was discovered by Europeans in the 16 th century, in Central and
South America. The native people had been enjoying a bitter chocolate drink there for over
3,000 years. Sugar and milk had to be added to please European tastes. The process of making
chocolate has been through many changes over the years, but depends on having the correct
temperature and combination of ingredients.
Much of the chocolate eaten today has been made into a solid bar, sometimes with added
ingredients, such as fruit or nuts. There are many different varieties of chocolate, ranging
from dark to white, although the ever-popular milk chocolate is still the biggest seller around
the world. Chocolate can be a snack between meals or a high-quality, one-of-a-kind treat.
Today, top chefs mix chocolate with many things including goat’s cheese and chilli peppers!
In a move to encourage children to eat more vegetables, a British supermarket has recently
launched a new range of frozen food. Among these, are chocolate-flavoured carrots!
