ASSIGNMENT NO. 1 : The Quantum Mechanical Description of the Atom and its Electronic Structure

Quantum Numbers Worksheet

Direction: Write your answer on the available space provided for each number.
A. Give the n and l values for the following orbitals

1s n=1 I=0
3p n=3 l=1
5f n=5 I=3
4d n=4 l=2

B. What is the ml values for the following types of orbitals?

s ml = 0
p ml = -1, 0, 1
d ml = -2, -1, 0, 1, 2
f ml = -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3

C. How many possible orbitals and how many electrons can inhabit the energy level n

4 16 orbitals and 32 electrons

5 25 orbitals and 50 electrons

D. State the number of possible electrons described by the following quantum numbers

n = 3, l = 0 2

n = 3, l = 1 6

n = 3, l = 2, ml = -1 2

n = 5, l = 0, ml =-2, ms =-1/2 not possible

E. What is the maximum electron pairs that can occupy an: s orbital

 Because the s sublevel has just one orbital, it can only hold two electrons. Hence, the maximum number
of electrons is 2

F. Give the importance of electron in an atom.

 Electrons give the atoms the volume, shape etc. Without the electrons, the atoms will be positively
charged. Without the electrons, the atoms cannot form bonds with each other
