March 2020
Electrical Risks & Hazards MALAYSIA

• Estimated 32,000 home structure fires per year associated with electrical
distribution equipment occur between the year 2013-2016; resulted in USD
674 million in direct property damage per year.

• Electrocutions rank FOURTH (9%) in causes of industrial FATALITIES (behind

traffic, violence and construction). The National Safety council estimates 600
people die every year of electrical causes. Most of these accidents involve
low voltage (600 volts or less).

• Between 2013 - 2016 there was an average of 406,700 residential fires per
year; approximately 69,000, or 17% were related to electrical distribution or
appliances and equipment.

MH OVER CURRENT PROTECTION RELAYS MALAYSIA

Overcurrent is a condition which exists on an electrical circuit when the normal

load current is exceeded. Any current in excess of the rated current of a conductor
or systems may result in risk of fire or shock from insulation damaged from heat
generated by overcurrent.

Typical Protection Curve
MALAYSIA

Normal Inverse / Standard Inverse (NI / SI)

• Most commonly used.

Very Inverse (VI)

• Suitable if there is a substantial reduction of fault
current as the fault distance from the power source
increases.
• Suitable for protection of motor load with peak
currents on switching in.

Extreme Inverse (EI)

• Suitable for protection of motor load with peak
currents on switching in (~switching inrush)

MH EARTH FAULT PROTECTION RELAYS MALAYSIA

A Ground Fault Detection and Protection method is typically used to continuously

monitor an AC electrical circuit for fault conditions, instantly disconnecting the
power in order to minimize loss of life or equipment damage.

How the Earth Fault Trigger MALAYSIA

Under normal conditions, the incoming and outgoing currents should

be equal in magnitude, flowing in opposite directions, i.e. the
resultant vector sum of the 3 phase currents should be zero in a
leakage-free system and can be equated as:

IR + IY + IB = 0 (3 Phase 3 Wire System)

IR + IY + IB + IN = 0 (3 Phase 4 Wire System)

In event of leakage due to insulation failure, direct phase to ground,

insulation deterioration, etc, the vector sum of currents will not
equate to zero.

Mechanical Trip Button (MTB) MALAYSIA

• MTB - Lock-Out Protection scheme according ANSI 86 is a critical function

to ensure highest safety in electrical network operation.

• Provide maximum safety to prevent re-energizing into faulty circuit.

• Mechanical latching design that remains functional without AUX power

supply

• Trip state indicator by physical position change that maintain visible under
all condition.

• Complied ANSI 86 lockout relay standard.

– Tap power from the downstream network after the circuit breaker point.

– Hold the relay state in tripped position even when AUX power is OFF.

DTL Earth Leakage Relay (EL series) MALAYSIA

IR + IY + IB = 0 (3 Phase 3 Wire System)

IR + IY + IB + IN = 0 (3 Phase 4 Wire System)
In event of leakage due to insulation failure, direct phase to ground, insulation
deterioration, etc, the vector sum of currents will not equate to zero. The Zero Current
Transformer (ZCT), a core balance transformer will thus sense the leakage current and
generates a small signal across it, consequently, being fed to the relay where it is
amplified and compared to the preset current level. When this level is exceeded by
‘detected‘ current, it will trigger the relay trip the circuit.
