Temperature Sensors
• These are the sensors that determine temperature by sensing a
physical characteristic, like electrical resistance, EMF or
thermal radiation

• Now-a-days, Temperature Sensors are being used everywhere,

mobiles, vehicles, computers and all digital items
Types of Temperature Sensors
The way Temperature Sensors works depends upon the physical property that
is measured. Sensor options include:

i. Thermostats
ii. RTD (Resistive
Temperature Detectors)

iii. Thermistors
iv. Thermocouples
Contact and non-contact temperature sensors

Contact Temp. Sensors Non-Contact Temp. Sensors

These sensors measure temperature These sensors measure temperature

while being in direct contact with irrespective of any type of contact
the medium with the medium

Medium can be any type of Medium here being the radiation

surrounding like air, water or emitted by any kind of heat source
solids
Need of Non-Contact Thermometers
1. As we all know the current situation of pandemic. Due to this
situation we all are facing problems.

2. The main symptom of this virus is ‘Fever’ and to measure fever

thermometers are used.

3. For the simple fever we can use ordinary or simple thermometer but for
this corona virus ‘non-contact type thermometer’ is mandatory because
this virus can spread through touching infected person’s body.

4. So for controlling the number of patients and for safe measurements

non-contact type thermometers are needed.
Benefits of Non-Contact Thermometer

• These non-contact devices can quickly measure

and display a temperature reading so a large
number of people can be evaluated individually
at point of entry.

• Non-contact infrared thermometers require

minimal cleaning betwin uses.

• Using non-contact temperature measurement

devices may help reduce risk of spreading.
Infrared Thermometer:

• Infrared Thermometer is non contact type thermometer, widely used

during this pandemic situation.

• This thermometer uses infrared rays to read the temperature.

Working of Infrared Thermometer:

1. A typical temperature sensor consists of optical component, IR

detector, electronics & display or interface output stage.

2. Optics focuses IR energy onto the detector that converts

IR energy into electrical signal.

3. After amplification, linearization and temperature

stabilization the electrical signal is converted to a value
representing the measured temperature.
MLX90614:

• MLX90614 is a thermal sensor used in

infrared thermometer for non-contact
temperature measurements.

• A 17-bit ADC and powerful DSP unit integrated in it to achieve

high accuracy and resolution.

• It can give customizable PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output for

continuous readings.
Specifications of MLX90614:

• Accuracy
a) Wide Temperature Range High accuracy of (+/-0.5°C)
b) Limited Temperature range (Medical Use) High accuracy of (+/-0.1°C)
• Resolution 0.02°C
• Range -40 to 125°C
• Cost Low cost (up to 850 Rs.)
• Size Small size
TSD305-2C55:

Specifications:

• Accuracy +/-0.1 C
• Operating Supply Current 1.05 mA
• Operating Supply Voltage 3.3 V
• Max. Operating Temperature 85 C
• Min. Operating Temperature -10 C
• Resolution 0.02 C
• Cost 1600/-(Approx.)
• Size Small
Conclusion

• We can conclude here by understanding the mechanism of these

sensors and their effect along with their specifications.

• We also get to know that theses sensors are playing a vital role
in the covid guns used for measuring the body temperature.

• The importance of Non-Contact sensors is briefly explained above.
