Linear Number Sequence
Worksheet 1

Name: ____________________ ( ) Class: 1 _______________ Date: _________________

A. Definition
A linear number sequence is a list of numbers, ________________________.
The numbers in each number sequence follow a specific rule or a _________________.
If you work out the rule, you can work out the next numbers in the sequence.
Turn to textbook page 180 to 182 to look at some examples on how to state the rule.

B. Terms in a number sequence

Each number in the number sequence is known as the ____________.
The terms are denoted using ______________ numbers, or ______________ integers such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, … .
We can write the 1st term as _________, and the 2nd term as _________ etc.
The _____________ term, __________, of a sequence can be represented by an algebraic expression in terms of
its term position, n , where n is a variable.
Hence,
General term of a number sequence = n th term = Tn , where n is a positive integer.

E. Different methods to find Tn
What you have learnt in SLS is not the only way to find general term in a number sequence.
Read textbook page 184 to 185 to learn 2 other methods that you can use in finding T n .

Method 1

Method 2

Method 3

After learning these 3 methods, which is your favourite? Why?

Using your favourite method, find the general term for this number sequence 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, …

Linear number sequence is also known as arithmetic progression (AP) such that
the difference between the consecutive terms is constant. As
such, the general term can be written in this manner:

T n=T 1+ ( n−1 ) d , where d is the common difference

¿ T 1−d +dn
¿ T 0+ dn , where T 0=T 1−d

Examples Common difference T 0=T 1−d General Term

Descending 17, 13, 9, 5, 1, …
