USE 1 "Will" to Express a Voluntary Action/Offer

"Will" often suggests that a speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is one the
speaker offers to do for someone else. Often we use "will" to respond to someone else's complaint or
request for help.

EXAMPLES:

A: I'm really hungry.


B: I'll make some sandwiches.

USE 2 "Will" to Express a Request

Will you help me with the dishes?

USE 3 "Will" to Express a Promise/Refusal

"Will" is usually used in promises or refusals

EXAMPLES:

I promise I will come tomorrow.

I won’t buy you these shoes!

USE 4
"Will" to Express a Prediction

EXAMPLES:

John Smith will be the next President.


You will have five children.

"Will" to Express an Instant Decision
Ok, I’ll go with you!

"Be going to" to Express a Plan (to have an intention/often some preparation is involved)

USE 1

"Be going to" expresses that something is a plan. It expresses the idea that a person intends to do
something in the future.

EXAMPLES:

He is going to spend his vacation in Hawaii.

When I come back home today I’m going to read my new book.

USE 2

"Be going to" is used to predict something based on evidence

EXAMPLES:

Look at the clouds! It’s going to rain.


Johnny doesn’t study. He’s not going to pass his Matura exams.
Will / Be Going to/Present Continuos

1. A: Why are you holding a piece of paper?


B: I (write) a letter to my friends back home in Texas.

2. A: I'm about to fall asleep. I need to wake up!


B: I (get) you a cup of coffee. That will wake you up.

3. A: I can't hear the television!


B: I (turn) it up so you can hear it.

4. We are so excited about our trip next month to France. We (visit) Paris, Nice and
Grenoble.

5. A: I'm hungry.
B: I (make) you a sandwich. .

6. A: It is so hot in here!
B: I (turn) the air conditioning on.

7. I think he (be) the next President of the United States.

8. After I graduate, I (attend) medical school and become a doctor. I


have wanted to be a doctor all my life.

9. A: Do you want to come over for dinner tonight?

    B: Oh, I'm sorry, I can't. I (go) to a movie tonight with some friends.

10. I (meet) my friend Tom on Saturday evening.

11. A: Excuse me, I need to talk to someone about our hotel room. I am afraid it is simply too small
for four people.
B: That man at the service counter (help) you.

12. If the weather clears up, we (walk) down to the beach and go swimming.
