SCHOOL CLIMATE 101
SUNSHINE COMMITTEE * ADMINISTRATORS * LEADERSHIP TEAM
Have you read Malcom Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point? One of the
examples he gives in his book is the NYC subway system. George L. Kelling
was hired as a consultant in 1985 to test his broken windows theory. The city
cleaned the subway system of graffiti. Graffiti was quickly cleaned any time
it appeared. The theory was that small crimes lead to bigger crimes.
Purging the subway of graffiti was the tipping point to make the NYC
subway system safer.
Just like small crimes lead to bigger crimes. I think a few negative
comments can spread quicker than 48 hour flu. Soon it seems like the
entire staff infected the negativ-itis. It is possible to make teachers and
staff members of your school feel appreciated and recognized for their
hard work. There are a variety of activities included with this packet. The
best thing is these activities are not the responsibility on one person on
campus. Some are systems, others can be delegated to a committee, some
are school wide events that everyone has a job to do. Hopefully one of
these will be your tipping point!

Food, Food, & more Food
Food brings people together, bonds them – plain and simple!
The first luncheon or two that you organize will seem like quite a bit of work and
you will wonder why you ever thought of the idea. Two words for
you . . . . .COMFORTABLE SHOES! It seems like I take a million steps the first few
luncheons. But, once you make these a regular event, you will be surprised at
how quickly everyone will learn the system.
Luncheon are a great way to build community and help our school feel like a
family. Don’t forget to include all the members of the “family”. Either the
leadership team or Sunshine Committee could make a point of inviting staff
members who often may not attend luncheons such as the custodial staff.
A luncheon cart is a big help. This will have all of the things that you need at
your fingertips ready to go. If at all possible, keep this locked up so that
someone doesn’t “borrow” some of your supplies between luncheons and
forgets to return them. Ask your custodian if he or she has a closet
somewhere to keep it.
Do you have a Sunshine Committee? Can you recruit a few members? You
need at least one member from each team of your school. Do not forget that
the office-administration is one team. It is important that the news of your
committee is disseminated to every member of your school family. Try to recruit
staff members who have a flexible schedule or planning periods right before
your first lunch period so they can help set up the luncheons.
If you are the chairman of the committee, the next thing I would suggest is
asking your administrator how the financial part of the committee will work for
you. Many times the chairman is responsible for purchasing the expensive part
of the events. Will your school give you a purchase order? Are you expected to
use your personal money and then get reimbursed later? Find out the

POTLUCK LUNCHEONS
• Luncheons can be organized different ways. If possible, it is best to
host these on days when everyone eats lunch at the same time like a
professional development day so the entire staff can socialize
together.
• If you plan a luncheon when staff members have different lunch
times, set out new food each lunch time so everyone gets fresh food.
• It helps if you coordinate your sign up with the number of lunch
times. Example: If you have 3 different lunch periods ask for 3 of
each of the items on your sign up. See example below.
• There is a blank signup on the next page plus one in the editable file.
Money or Food
• Staff can either sign up to bring food or pay $5 to attend the luncheon.
• Money for luncheon is collected the same way as ordering in food / food
delivery. Procedures are:
• Get extra $1 bills ahead of times.
• Staple a staff list on the collection envelope.
• Keep the envelope with a trusted employee in the office.
• Staff member gives the money and order form (if needed) to the
employee.
• Employee highlights employee’s name on staff list stapled to envelope.
• All money is due by 3 p.m. the day BEFORE the luncheon.
• It is helpful if you send a reminder email the morning before the luncheon to
either pay $5 by 3 p.m. or sign up and bring food on the signup.
Set up – Clean Up
• The day before put Blue Ice gel packs in the freezer (if needed)
• Need power strip for crock pot
• Ask your custodian for extra trashcans
• Put meat in crock pots to keep warm.
• Add extra water to meat in crock pots to stay moist.
• Slow cooker liners Reynolds makes cleaning much easier!

LUNCHEON CART
• Keep this cart locked up between luncheons. I can not stress this enough.
People always have good intentions when they borrow. But, the day of a
luncheon, it adds stress to your already busy morning if you have to search for
a missing ladle or pot holder.
• It is also helpful to have at least one folding table (72X30) for your buffet.

Share the Love
People who work with children are a giver by nature. You give of your time,
energy, and resources. At times it may seem to others that you have this unlimited
supply of strength, patience, and energy to give to others. We in the trenches
know this couldn’t be further from the truth.
You can help another person and yourself at the same time when you “share the
love”. I find that when I am stressed, if I do something for someone else, I make
them happy and myself, too!
Lend an ear
• Administrators-Leaders-Reading Specialists-Special Ed.:
• Grab your coffee cup in the morning and walk around and take
the pulse of the staff before school. Walk in and out of
classroom. Tell teachers you are just touching base to see how
things are going. Some will keep it to professional talk, others
will open up to more personal issues about them or students.
Either way you might find out about issues ahead of time.
Helping hands
There are so many ways you can lend a helping hand when you are in a
school. It seems like there is always someone who needs a little help.
• Take a recess duty one day for the teammate who is having trouble with
asthma, pregnant, or on crutches.
• Is there someone at your school who is going through a personal
problem? Offer to pack a lunch for him or her and invite that person to

FACULTY MEETING
Door Prizes
Door prizes for faculty meetings is a great way to start to the meeting
and encourage staff to show up on time!
• Everyone who pays Sunshine Committee dues name is put in the box
(because funds from the committee purchase some of the prizes).
This included administrator, classified staff, and certified staff.
Include the classified staff to attend the first 15 minutes of the
meeting. Some staff members may have duty or answering phones.
• Winners must be present to win, except for classified staff that have
duty. Put the names of the winners who aren’t present back in the
box so they had a chance to win another day. Exception: Staff
members on duty. They can chose their prize after duty.
• Winners' names are not put back in the box.
• Winners can only win once.
The magic of 2-3 prizes a week will bring little rays of sunshine to your
school!

HAPPY FALL TO YOU!
To add a little fun in October, we are organizing an activity that
is a little like Secret Santa. This activity is called “You’ve been
BOOed”. A staff member will secretly leave you a fall themed
bag of treats. In the bag will be a sign that says “I’ve been
.BOOed”. You hang it outside your classroom so other people
will know that you’ve already been BOOed and will choose
someone who hasn’t had a turn yet. You then have 3 days to
organize a treat bag and secretly give it to a staff member
who hasn’t received one yet.
Please hang a pumpkin outside your classroom if you do not
wish to participate. You can use the pumpkin at the bottom of
the page if you want. If someone accidentally BOOs you and
you don’t want to participate, please give the bag of treats to
someone who is participating and hasn’t been BOOed yet.
