9001, 14001 & 45001 in Total Quality
Management "

Introduction:
ISO STANDARDS ARE INTERNATIONALLY AGREED BY EXPERTS

Think of them as a formula that describes the best way of doing

something.
It could be about making a product, managing a process, delivering a
service or supplying materials – standards cover a huge range of activities.
Standards are the distilled wisdom of people with expertise in their subject
matter and who know the needs of the organizations they represent –
people such as manufacturers, sellers, buyers, customers, trade
associations, users or regulators.
For instance,
 Quality management standards  to help work more efficiently and
reduce product failures.
 Environmental management standards to help reduce environmental
impacts, reduce waste and be more sustainable.
 Health and safety standards to help reduce accidents in the
workplace.
 Energy management standards to help cut energy consumption.

 Food safety standards to help prevent food from being contaminated.

 IT security standards to help keep sensitive information secure.
What is ISO standards?
ISO is the International Organisation for Standardisation, founded in
1947, that establishes standards for businesses and organisations in
163 countries worldwide. The international indication ISO is derived
from the Greek word ‘equal’ and can be understood in all languages.

On an international level, ISO often collaborates with IEC;

the International Electrotechnical Commission. In the Netherlands, for
example, the national body that manages the ISO standards is the NEN;
the Netherlands Normalisation Institute.

ISO Standards 9001:

ISO 9001 is the international standard for creating a Quality Management
Systems (QMS), published by ISO (the International Organization for
Standardization). The standard was most recently updated in 2015, and it is
referred to as ISO 9001:2015. In order to be released and updated, ISO 9001 had
to be agreed upon by a majority of member countries so that it would become an
internationally recognized standard, which means it is accepted by a majority of
countries worldwide.

Importants of ISO 9001 :

As stated above, ISO 9001:2015 is an internationally recognized standard for
creating, implementing, and maintaining a Quality Management System for a
company. It is intended to be used by organizations of any size or industry, and it
can be used by any company. As an international standard, it is recognized as the
basis for any company to create a system to ensure customer satisfaction and
improvement and, as such, many corporations require this certification from their
suppliers.
ISO 9001 certification provides your customers reassurance that you have
established a Quality Management System based on the seven quality
management principles of ISO 9001. To learn more about the quality
management principles behind the ISO 9001 standard, take a look at this
article: Seven Quality Management Principles behind ISO 9001 requirements.
In fact, ISO 9001 is such an essential and influential standard that it is used as the
basis when industry groups want to create their own industry standards; this
includes AS9100 for the aerospace industry, ISO 13485 for the medical devices
industry, and AITF 16949 for the automotive industrtry.

Rquirements the ISO 9001 :

The structure of the ISO 9001:2015 standard is split into 10 sections (clauses). The
first three are introductory, while the last seven contain the requirements for the
Quality Management System against which a company can be certified. Here is
what the seven main clauses are about:
Clause 4: Context of the organization – This section talks about requirements for
understanding your organization in order to implement a QMS. It includes the
requirements for identifying internal and external issues, identifying interested
parties and their expectations, defining the scope of the QMS, and identifying
your processes and how they interact. Expectations of interested parties include
regulatory requirements as well.
Clause 5: Leadership – The leadership requirements cover the need for top
management to be instrumental in the implementation of the QMS. Top
management needs to demonstrate commitment to the QMS by ensuring
customer focus, defining and communicating the quality policy, and assigning
roles and responsibilities throughout the organization.
Clause 6: Planning – Top management must also plan for the ongoing function of
the QMS. Risks and opportunities of the QMS in the organization need to be
assessed, and quality objectives for improvement need to be identified and plans
made to accomplish these objectives.
Clause 7: Support – The support section deals with the management of all
resources for the QMS, covering the necessity to control all resources, including
human resources, buildings and infrastructure, the working environment,
monitoring and measurement resources, and organizational knowledge. The
section also includes requirements around competence, awareness,
communication, and controlling documented information (the documents and
records required for your processes).
Clause 8: Operation – The operation requirements deal with all aspects of the
planning and creation of the product or service. This section includes
requirements on planning, product requirements review, design, controlling
external providers, creating and releasing the product or service, and controlling
nonconforming process outputs.
Clause 9: Performance evaluation – This section includes the requirements
needed to make sure that you can monitor whether your QMS is functioning well.
It includes monitoring and measuring your processes, assessing customer
satisfaction, internal audits, and ongoing management review of the QMS.
Clause 10: Improvement – This last section includes the requirements needed to
make your QMS better over time. This includes the need to assess process
nonconformity and taking corrective actions for processes.
These sections are based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, which uses these
elements to implement change within the processes of the organization in order
to drive and maintain improvements within the processes.

ISO Standard 14001:

Environmental Management Systems - Requirements With Guidance For Use
ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an environmental management
system that an organization can use to enhance its environmental performance.
ISO 14001:2015 is intended for use by an organization seeking to manage its
environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the
environmental pillar of sustainability.
ISO 14001:2015 helps an organization achieve the intended outcomes of its
environmental management system, which provide value for the environment,
the organization itself and interested parties. Consistent with the organization's
environmental policy, the intended outcomes of an environmental management
system include:
+ enhancement of environmental performance;
+ fulfillment of compliance obligations;
+ achievement of environmental objectives.

ISO Standard 45001:

Every day, thousands of lives are lost due to work accidents or fatal diseases
linked to work activities. These are deaths that could and should have been
prevented, and must be in the future. ISO 45001 aims to help organizations do
just that. Here, Kristian Glaesel and Charles Corrie tell us how the new standard
will bring safety to the front line.
Whether you are an employee, a manager or a business owner, you share a
common goal – you don’t want anyone to get hurt on the job. Improved
productivity stems from ensuring people operate in workplaces that provide
transparency and build trust throughout their operation and supply chain. In
addition, responsible practices are becoming increasingly important to brands and
reputations.
ISO Standards 9001 for indrutry ;

ISO 9001 is based on the plan-do-check-act methodology and provides a

process-oriented approach to documenting and reviewing the structure,
responsibilities, and procedures required to achieve effective quality
management in an organization. Specific sections of the standard contain
information on many topics, such as:
 Requirements for a QMS, including documented information,
planning and determining process interactions
 Responsibilities of management
 Management of resources, including human resources and an
organization’s work environment
 Product realization, including the steps from design to delivery
 Measurement, analysis, and improvement of the QMS through
activities like internal audits and corrective and preventive action
Changes introduced in the 2015 ISO 9001 revision are intended to ensure
that ISO 9001 continues to adapt to the changing environments in which
organizations operate. Some of the key updates in ISO 9001:2015 include:
 The introduction of new terminology
 Restructuring some of the information
 An emphasis on risk-based thinking to enhance the application of the
process approach
 Improved applicability for services
 Increased leadership requirements
The Importance of ISO Certification in
Manufacturing:
For organizations that manufacture any type of product, overall quality and
customer satisfaction are extremely critical. This is particularly important for
companies that manufacture complex products, such as vehicles or medical
devices. Note that vehicle manufacturers, particularly in the United States but
also in other countries, have established their own quality standards for third
party suppliers. Additionally, medical device manufacturers are typically required
to satisfy specific standards such as ISO 13485.
And when components and assemblies for the end product are manufactured at
different factories worldwide, it’s even more complicated to ensure that quality
assurance systems are working properly.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards enable
manufacturers to continually measure, evaluate, and improve the systems that
ensure product quality and reliability. Consequently, manufacturers have to verify
that their products always fit together properly, function accurately, and meet
customer expectations.
The International Organization for Standardization is an organization that
publishes standards for goods, services, and processes. The international
standards act as benchmarks for quality and efficiency in a number of industries,
the majority related to the supply chain and, as such, manufacturing.

The ISO 9000 family of standards help companies satisfy the needs of their
customers, meet regulatory requirements, and achieve continual improvement.
ISO 9001, which sets out the criteria for a quality management system (QMS), is
the only standard in the family that provides certification. To be certified to the
ISO 9001 standard, an organization must follow the requirements set forth in the
ISO 9001 standard.
To become certified, a company hires a third-party firm to audit its processes,
services, and products. The auditors measure the proper specifications and
determine whether or not the organization meets the ISO 9001 criteria.
Companies use the ISO 9001 standard to demonstrate that they can consistently
provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements
as well as demonstrate continuous improvement.
ISO 9001 requires calibration of measuring and testing equipment, i.e.
measurement traceability, along with continual improvement of the effectiveness
of the QMS. Continual improvement is fueled by the objectives set by an
organization’s leaders. At a minimum, the quality objectives should address the
improvement of internal efficiency, the individual customer requirements, and
the level of performance that the company’s industry experts.
ISO 9001 helps organizations find more effective ways to ensure quality while
encouraging businesses to find creative ways to exceed customer requirements.
The benefits of ISO 9001 in manufacturing include enabling companies to identify,
document, and improve the systems that address customer requirements, such as
dimensional and functional specifications and expected production efficiencies.
Since ISO standards mandate the process of continuous improvement, ISO 9001-
certified companies are more apt to reduce overall errors, which saves money,
improves customer satisfaction, and makes them more competitive.
Why ISO Certifications Matter In Manufacturing
Industries:

When manufacturing any type of product, overall quality and customer

satisfaction are extremely important. This is especially critical for complex
products like vehicles. Quality assurance can be further complicated when
components and assemblies for the end product are manufactured at different
plants around the world. This practice is common for molded plastic parts that
make up the vehicle’s interior such as air-conditioning vents and cell phone trays.
Because these items are highly visible and used daily by the customer, robust
designs and proper fabrication are absolutely essential. ISO and other standards
challenge manufacturers to continually measure, evaluate, and improve systems
that ensure overall product quality and reliability. As a result, manufacturers are
challenged to verify that all products fit together properly and function flawlessly
each and every time.
What are the benefits of ISO Certification?

ISO certification for your manufacturing business could deliver the following
benefits:
 More efficient delivery of products
 Reduction in errors, resulting in reduced waste
 Improved environmental performance of your supply chain
 Compliance with legislation and regulations
 Reduced costs
 Increased business - both new and existing
 Enhanced reputation, by demonstrating your commitment to meeting
international standards of excellence.

Overview of ISO :
The ISO organization develops, publishes, and maintains more than 22,450
standards through technical committees that include members from all over the
world. These standards provide information on how to design and build products,
perform specific testing, and create management systems.
It has developed over 23925 International Standards and all are included in the
ISO Standards catalogue.
