HOW SOFTWARE GIVES YOU SCORES?

Scoring Criteria Detailed Analysis:

Many times, you may feel that for all the integrated tasks, the scoring criteria shown in Guide is not
the same as the software gives you the final score on your score report.
Let's understand the scores of hidden module say in this question is Listening.
Try to understand the below asked questions and their corresponding answers.

1. Have you read anywhere that whatever the score you get for the content, will exactly be added
to the listening or say in Reading (taken as a hidden module in speaking section)?
Answer will be No. We might have read or listened from here or there that content will be
added to the Hidden module, and so we start believing in it.
2. If content score is exactly added to the Hidden module, then is it fair enough every time, each
student is getting highest marks as 3 for speaking even the short sentences and long
sentences?
In other words, assume that there are two sentences: one with 8 words and the other with 14
words. Let's say a person spoke both sentences with all the words.
Why for speaking 8 words, getting 3 marks as maximum in content and also when speak 14
words, still 3 marks as maximum in content?
Think!!! Is it fair?
3. from As per PTE Score Guide, you get 2 marks out of 3, if you speak At least 50% of words in
the response from the prompt in the correct sequence, get 1/3, if you speak less than 50% of
words in the response from the prompt in the correct sequence
Then what about those sentences which have odd number of words?
And also understand the term “at least 50%” = you are speaking minimum 50% words.
Say a sentence has 12 words.
Its 50% will be 6 words.
At least 50% will be 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 words.
Again the same question, one speaks 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 or 11 words, but he or she is getting
2 marks only.
Again this is something which is nonsensical.
And the same for the time when it is 1/3 for speaking less than 50% words from a prompt
which is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 words, and getting 1 for all these spoken words.
This doesn’t seem adequate.
Rather scoring should be based on number of words speaking by the test-taker like speaking
fewer words, then less score. It may be like 1 mark for speaking one word accurate.
As there is no negative marking, so focus should be on uttering as many correct words.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

 You will have 4-6 seconds before the audio starts playing. Use this time to focus yourself on the
question. Once the audio starts, concentrate on what you are hearing. Focus your mind on
what the speaker is saying. When you will be listening, the other students sitting in the same
room, are also speaking that actually creates disturbance, but you should not lose your
concentration, so practice in noisy environment.
 NEVER close your eyes when you listen to the audio as you will not get to know when to start
speaking as there will not be any beep sound in the exam.
 As the speaker stops immediately after that you see the status "Recording" on the screen.

DO NOT START SPEAKING NOW.

 Let the bar come and it will be there for maximum 10 seconds. When you see the bar, only then
start speaking as it is a software works through internet, so takes time to capture the spoken
words. It can never immediately picks up your words.
SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL.
 Do not think much in the starting or in between, as a pause taken by you of more than 3
seconds, will make the microphone off for that question, no matter whether this pause is taken
in the starting or in between. And noticeable thing is that you won't get any notification on the
screen that your 3 seconds are gone. So NEVER close your eyes when you speak.
 Some people prefer to write the initials on the notepad of the words when they are listening. Try
this method in your practice, if it suits you only then follow, otherwise focus on listening and
speaking the words.
 You should practice the method in mock test before real exam so that you are able to smoothly
crack this question type.

TIPS AND STRATEGIES

1. When you are listening, your focus should be on understanding the meaning of the sentence.
If you understand the theme and the meaning, remembering words becomes easier.
2. Mimicking the tone of the speaker will help you a lot to speak more.
Each audio that you will listen, will be spoken with an intonation i.e. by adding all the ups and
downs in the voice so that you can understand the theme of the sentence.
For example: Companies want to protect their brands from negative comments.
The speaker should be stressing the bold words in the above sentence. Pick up the tone,
understand and speak.
3. If you can listen to short English sentences and repeat them correctly, you can get a high
score in this question type. This PTE Repeat Sentence question type is a simple test of how
well you can listen, understand and then reproduce what you have just heard.
4. It is also recommended to try to remember the sentence visually. That is, paint a picture in
your mind corresponding to what you have just heard.
5. Brush up your vocabulary. Go through the Academic word list and make sure you are familiar
with the words that are most likely to appear in the exam, for this you can read the real exam
mostly repeated Repeat Sentences from https://ptetutorials.com/exam-memories-
materials, which has the collection of real exam questions since 2018. Knowing the words
means you will easily recognize and remember them when you hear a sentence.
6. Get used to listening English audio. If you do not work or study in an English speaking
environment or are new to it, you must get used to listening and speaking English in the days
before your PTE Exam. Check out a resource such as TED Talks, English with Lucy, scientific
American. You can download any app which is used for speaking fluently like:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funbox.dailyenglishconversation&hl=
en_IN
It has more than 1200 everyday used short sentences which can be proven as a good booster
to set up the basics for this task.

Tips &
Strategies

www.ptetutorials.online 05
7. The most important point in this task is to speak the words with correct and clear
pronunciation, no matter whether you are aware of the words or not, you are just required to
pronounce them correctly.
Suppose you got this sentence in exam:
(a.) Fish oil is a good source of omega 3 for your body.
(b.) And you are not aware what this omega 3 is.
(c.) You have heard it and can produce the sound, only this matters.
8. Sometimes you fumble while reproducing the words. Once or twice if you have fumbled,
that's OK! No need to panic else your rest of the questions or tasks would suffer as your mind
would stuck in the previous question only.
9. Listen to the audio as if the speaker is your mentor and you have to obey him or her, and
whatever he or she speaks, take it as a command. It would really help you understand better.
10. Many times, students complain that they are not able to recall the long sentences. So what
should be done for this?
(a.) Remember one thing; nothing can be achieved so easy. Practice is the success key.
1. Generally this task is practiced with the incorrect approach.
2. Play the audio, listen, try to speak.
3. Now not able to speak, fumbling and eating the words etc. happen.
4. Continuously the same practice we do for 10-20 questions and then one tag will be
given to the question: It is very difficult task, and will become a phobia then!
5. Now follow this:
6. Play the audio.
7. Didn't get the words, play it again.
8. Play one audio until you are able to produce 90% of the content from the prompt.
9. We know that in exam audio will be played once, but it is just the starting time when
you are introducing how to perform in this task to your mind. Mind takes time to get
habitual of something. We are not robots that we can speak something immediately
after listening. It takes time to get familiar with the task.
10. Follow this method with first 50-100 sentences.
11. And when you would think that now I'm a bit more confident now in this task, then
play the audio for lesser times and gradually, reduce the count.
12. Not in one or two days, you will become efficient. Have patience. Daily practice at
least 70-80 sentences.

www.ptetutorials.online 06
(b.) All the long sentences having more than 10 words, may have used some such words
which would be easy to understand and speak. For example:
1. Parents of children who are found outside of school can be punished under the law.
(meaningful and easy to understand)
2. The psychology department is looking for volunteers to be involved in research
projects.
3. Please sort and order the slides of the presentation according to public and speech
time.
4. To answer this complex question with a simple yes or no is absolutely impossible.
5. Meeting with mentors can be scheduled for students who require additional
support.
6. On behalf of our department, I would like to thank you for your participation.
7. You should include your name and identification number in the form.
8. When I was in school, I had many of the same problems you do now.
9. Unfortunately, the two most interesting economic selection clashes on my
timetable.
10. There will be ample opportunities to ask questions about the presentation.

If you listen to these audios with understanding, easily you can speak all the words.

IN A NUTSHELL – CURATED SUMMARY

PTE Repeat Sentences test your overall listening skills and pronunciation. In this question type,
you will hear a sentence from the recording. Speak as much of the sentence as you can.
The key skills required for this task are the ability to listen to an English audio and ability to speak.
You need to practice the listening exercises to score maximum in this task as it will not only help
you to understand better the native speakers, will also help to know the correct pronunciation of
the words.
Use the most convenient method to capture the sentence and practice it more and more to set
your strategies to accomplish the task, so that you don't get it difficult in real exam.
If you get stuck in the middle of the recording or lose your focus, chances are that you will
completely miss the remaining sentence. The thumb rule is to focus on catching the meaning of
the sentence and speaking as many correct words from the audio in the given sequence as audio.
