Introduction

In this Question type, you have to frame a sentence on the basis of the audio. You need to
understand the sentence properly and write it down correctly without spelling or grammatical
mistakes to score full marks in this question type. Precisely, you have to reproduce the same
sentence in writing as the audio clip.

No of questions:
3-4 questions.
You will have 4-6 seconds before the audio starts playing. There is no fixed time limit for a single
question.

listening skills and grammatical cues to recreate the same sentence in the audio. The good thing is
that there is no negative marking. It is one of the most important integrated task

Ideal time limit:

Time management is the key in the listening module. Write from dictation is an important and high-
weighted task. It is the last task of the entire exam. Students should manage their time wisely in the
listening module, so that they can have some spare time of around 4 to 5 minutes for write from
dictation.

How Software gives you scores?

This question type tests a very fundamental skill to listen to a short sentence and be able to recall it
correctly by writing it down. If you are comfortable with this basic language skills, you can score
well in this question type.
In this question, as both Listening and Writing skills are tested, just understand this:

4. Punctuation matters or not? 4. Punctuation matters or not?

It doesn't matter for Listening scores. As in Punctuation is an important part when you
listening, word should be typed with correct write something. So in Writing module, it may

Example: 1. Take care of comma, semi-colon, question

4. Put comma, semi-colon, question mark or

immediately, no space should be given.

Now you may say that Writing module may have more weight as compared to Listening Module as in writing
module, more skills are tested.
So pay more attention to this task, sometimes skipping one word or even writing one-word wrong may lead
to reappearance in exam if your target is 79 each in PTE-A

What do you need to do?

You will get 4 to 6 seconds before the audio question. Once the audio question begins, focus on the
question. You can either try to type it directly in the answer space: an efficient way that can be mastered with
practice is by noting down the first letter of each word, or first understand, and then type after the audio has
stopped playing depending on the most convenient method for you. You should practice the method in
mock test before real exam, so that you are able to smoothly crack this question type.

Four Methods of attempting
1) Sharpen your memory- treat the root cause:

Try to understand the sentence rather than remembering the sentence. This approach will help you take the
most number of words and in sequence as well.

2) Note the first half and remember the last:

You can use this approach by writing the first half of the sentence either in the box or in the book and by
remembering the last half of the sentence.

3) note the last half and remember the first:

In this method, you can jot down the last half of the sentence in the given answer box or in the provided
booklet and remember the first half.

4) Write initials of the words:

In this approach, you can write down the first initial of the words and complete the sentence. The initials can
be written in the booklet or in the box.
For example:
Students' need to submit their assignment by next Friday.
Initials: SNTSTABNF

The above method can be used to remember the sequence of the sentence, but sometimes students may
find it difficult to remember the exact word on the basis of the initials.

www.ptetutorials.online 05
Tips and strategies

When you listen to a sentence, listen to it with an objective as if you are listening to a command or a
request, you are in a better position to remember the whole sentence. For example- Eating too much can
lead to many health problems and disorder.

Focus on understanding the meaning of the sentence. This will make it easier to remember the words and
write them later. This will also help in such cases where you have missed the words or not able to catch the
accent of the speaker accurately.

In the end, read what you have written and make sure it makes sense. Also check for grammar and
spellings as you may lose marks for silly spelling or grammar mistakes. It is highly recommended to
quickly review your answer before moving on to the next question.

In a sentence, you may write either in words or numeral form, but to be on the safer side, write in words e.g.
fourteenth, ten thirty. But always write years in numbers only like 1998, 2001 etc.

If you are unsure of any word and you have two options in the mind, then you can write two words
assuming that the software will choose the correct word giving you full marks. However, one important
aspect of using this strategy is that you may end up losing marks in the writing section as the whole
sentence should be meaningful. Hence, if you do follow this approach, then you have to be aware about
the consequences on score contribution to the writing segment.

If for some reason you are unable to understand the sentence or take notes, then you have to give your
best shot based on whatever you remember. For example, if you only remember 2 or 3 words from the
sentence, then instead of just typing those 2 or 3 words, combine them into a logical sentence, and then,
type them into the response box. So, even if you write a portion of the sentence, you will get a few marks.

It is essential that every sentence your write in the "Write from Dictation" task begins with a capital letter,
and ends with a full stop. Don't mix singular and plural nouns, or introduce article where there are none.

It is recommended to practice as many questions in the exercise for jumbled words as possible. This shall
drastically impact your ability to score maximum marks in this task.

The most common mistake that is frequently encountered by the PTE aspirants is that they spend
unnecessary amount of the time in the other tasks. Now, as you know that the listening module has a
collective time frame, which puts you in a position where you are literally left with zero or few minutes to
complete Write from dictation tasks.

You must save at least 4 to 5 minutes for the Write from Dictation as this question type will come at last.
You should not miss on the easy marks in this task by recalling the simple words in the correct sequence.

Please remember that the next item does not start until you click the Next button at the bottom of the
screen.

In a nutshell - Curated Summary
PTE Write from dictation tests your overall listening, grammar and writing skills . In this question type, you
will hear a sentence from the recording. Type the sentence in the box below exactly as you hear it. Write as
much of the sentence as you can.

The key skills required for this task are the ability to listen to an English audio and ability to write the correct
answer in the given box. You need to practice the listening exercises to score maximum in this task as the
score entirely depends on the number of correct words written in the response as compared to the words
spoken in the recording.

In short, When audio starts you should be ready to type or write. Use the most convenient method to capture
the sentence. If the speaker has gone ahead to the next word, you should stop typing or writing immediately
and go to the next word.

If you get stuck in the middle of the recording or lose your focus, chances are that you will completely miss
the remaining sentence. The thumb rule is to focus on catching the meaning of the sentence and writing as
many correct words from the audio in the given sequence as audio.
