A WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR
Women entrepreneurs may be defined as a woman or a group of
women who initiate, organise and run a business concern.
Women entrepreneurs are those women who think of a business
enterprise, initiate it, organise and combine factors of production,
operate the enterprise and undertake risks and handle economic
uncertainty involved in running it.
DEFINITION- " WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR"
Schumpeter – “Women entrepreneurs are those women who
innovate, initiate or adopt a business activity”.

Government of India – “A woman entrepreneur is defined as


an enterprise owned and controlled by a woman having a
minimum financial interest of 51 percent of the capital and
giving at least 51 percent of the employment generated in the
enterprise to women.”
IMPORTANCE OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS
In this dynamic world, women entrepreneurs are a significant part of the global
expedition for sustained economic development and social progress. Due to the
growing industrialization, urbanization, social legislation and along with the
spread of higher education and awareness, the emergence of Women owned
businesses are highly increasing in the economies of almost all countries.

In former days, for Women there were 3 Ks- Kitchen, Kids, Knitting, then came 3
Ps- Powder, Pap pad, Pickles and now at present there are 4 Es- Electricity,
Electronics, Energy, Engineering. Indian women had undergone a long way and
are becoming increasingly visible and successful in all spheres and have shifted
from kitchen to higher level of professional activities.
PROBLEMS WOMEN FACE IN INDIA WHILE SETTING UP AN
ENTREPRENEURIAL PROJECT:
● Family ties, homemaking, child-rearing responsibilities.
● Lack of support from family members, who want women to choose “secure
and safe” jobs.
● Old school lending institutions that question the credibility of women, even
though the loan repayment rate of women is higher than that of men.
● The red tape and tangles of bureaucracy.
● And, a patriarchal society that makes it difficult for women to compete with
their male counterparts.

But, then in the last few years, with digitization, liberalization, growth of e-
commerce and social networks, plenty has changed. Today, a vast majority of
startups in India are either run by a team of women or has a female co-founder.
STEADY RISE OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN INDIA

A steadily growing tribe of woman entrepreneurs


in India have been marking their identity, across
domains and industries.
From conventional woman-friendly enterprises like
cottage industries to new-age startups, women
have started holding the reins everywhere.
From woman entrepreneurs who are in the limelight like
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Ekta Kapoor, Indra Nooyi, Suchi
Mukherjee, Richa Kar, Aditi Gupta to several others who
carry out their business ventures quietly — India is home
to a diverse set of woman entrepreneurs.

Most women with small income are likely to become
entrepreneurs

support of their husband they accepted

MALLIKA SRINIVASAN

Position: Director TAFE (Tractor and Farm Equipment)


Mallika Srinivasan is the Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of TAFE -
Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited, a
US $1.6 billion tractor major
incorporated in 1960 at Chennai, India.
TAFE is today, the third largest tractor
manufacturer in the world and the
second largest in India, by volumes, with
presence in over 82 countries, including
developed countries in Europe and
America.
Mallika Srinivasan is a thought leader and a strategist, recognized for
entrepreneurship, commitment to excellence and contribution to
Indian agriculture machinery business and academia. She is
presently the Chairman and Managing Director of TAFE – Tractors
and Farm Equipment Limited, an INR 10,000 Crore tractor major
incorporated in 1960 at Chennai, India. TAFE is today, the third
largest tractor manufacturer in the world and the second largest in
India by volumes, with an annual sale of over 180,000 tractors and
presence in over 100 countries, including developed countries in
Europe and the Americas. TAFE is also a significant shareholder in
AGCO Corporation, USA - a US $9.1 billion tractor and agricultural
equipment manufacturer.
In a span of 25 years, Mallika has established TAFE as a quality mass
manufacturer of tractors, a lean and resilient organization that can
effectively weather the cyclicality of the tractor business. With her special
emphasis on product and process development, she has ensured
significant expansion of TAFE's product range. She enhanced and
leveraged the engineering strengths at TAFE to design, develop and
manufacture a range of products for international markets, while
simultaneously strengthening TAFE's partnership with AGCO for mutual
growth, in both, the components and complete tractors businesses.
