Task:
Write a short essay describing the two elements (practices, conventions, or strategies)
presented in this module that you consider the most important for good academic
writing. You are expected to make reflective contributions on this issue. Therefore, it is
important that your opinions, positions and choices are based on sound arguments.

In addition, you should bear in mind the instructions below:

A. Follow a three-section structure (as shown in the figure below) in your message
with a short introduction, a main body separated into paragraphs (as many as
you need) that will contain the main information of your message, and a brief
single-paragraph conclusion summarizing the ideas represented in your
message.

B. Use everything you learned in this module to write your message. That is, your
message needs to have an academic register and follow all the academic
writing conventions presented within the first five units.

C. You should include ideas from other authors as long as their work is properly
acknowledged. Use the APA 6th edition citation style.

Length: 300-350 words.

Note: This task must be submitted within a week and you should make all
changes suggested by your teacher.

Academic writing is a form of writing which is used in academic work. Therefore, it has
a lot of rules, methods, steps, cites to get a good academic writing.

In my opinion, the theme of style and conventions is significant as it can be the initial
introduction to how academic writing is structured and it helps us to understand about
academic writing in a better way.

Most texts on writing style encourage authors to avoid overly-complex words.

However, most undergraduates admit to deliberately increasing the complexity of their
vocabulary to give the impression of intelligence. (OPPENHEIMER)

According to Stephan Baileys (cited in Fiona Gilbert, Oxford Brookes University,

UK) Academic Writing is one of the few academic writing books that deal with core
areas effectively - language, text type, academic conventions and the writing process.
This is done by giving simple explanations, authentic examples and useful practice
opportunities which can either be done in class or as self-study.

Citations are also important, because according to Bailey (2014) “anything that is not
common knowledge or your own ideas and research must be cited and referenced.”

Quotations are an important tool when you want to look for and to use information
from other authors; although it should not be over-used, therefore you must learn to
paraphrase and summarize in order to include other writers’ ideas in your work. In the
words of Bailey (2014) “it is not a good excuse to say that you didn’t know the rules of
plagiarism, or that you didn’t have time to write in your own words.”

In conclusion writers should be careful with the overuse of formality and complexity
on their writing because gives the appearance that the paper is more about faking an
intellectual style than substance.
