AN OBSERVATION GUIDE FOR THE LEARNER’S CHARACTERISTICS

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the
provided space.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their
ages.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
4. Can the learners already work independently?
5. Describe their span of attention.
6. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.

For the past three weeks of my observation, I was able to observe every learners
regarding on their different behaviors. Especially, their physical and mental behavior.
In a class where I am observing, the range of their age is 13-18 yrs.old. They are 51
students in all, 19 boys and 32 girls. At some point the learners can already manage their
own behavior. Based on what I have observed, the learners cannot work independently;
they just depend on the works of their classmates. In terms of their attention, they have a
better span of attention compare to that of the lower levels. But they need a guide from
their teachers to correct their wrong doings. Based on their concentration in the class they
need also guidance because some of them cannot understand the said task of their teachers.
In terms of their listening skills and ability to contrite, the students only show that
they are listening when their teacher is around but if not will just roam around the room
talking with one another and playing to each other. They do not yet know how to
concentrate. They are just concentrating only when they are interested. But most of the time
they are not listening to what the teacher told them.

AN OBSERVATION GUIDE FOR THE CLASSROOM VISIT

Be guided by these questions as you do your observation of the classroom


management. It is also good to ask the teacher for additional information so you can
verify your observation. Write your notes below; and then organize your data in the
table that follows.

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids,
books, students’ belongings, supplies, etc.)?
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?
4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (prayer, attendance,
assignment of monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do?

Your Analysis

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learner’s behavior?
 The classroom organization and routines affects the learner behavior in a
sense that it serves as a guide for the students on how to manage their task
and it also serve as a guide for them to change their attitude because they
know that their teacher is monitoring their behavior.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when he/she designs the classroom
organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
 The teacher should bare in his mind when he designs the classroom
organization and routine, the effects of those to the learners, what would be
the outcome of those things if it is effective or not.
 I guess the theory of John Dewey which is the experimental learning or the
learning by doing. By this theory we can help our students to work or learn
independently, because not all times we have a companion to do our task,
they should learn to face the world independently without depending to
others.
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners?
in motivating students? Why were they effective?
 I guess the effective strategy in managing the behavior of the students is
the recitation or the student centered strategy so that the students will
be attentive to the discussion and will focus their attention to the lesson,
so that if the teacher will asked a question they will not be afraid to
answer.

Your Reflections
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level
do you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this
level? Why?
 I’m imagining myself in the first section in the second year level. If ever I will
be organizing a classroom,the routines that I will practice is first the prayer
and then checking of the attendance. I would also do different exercises to
measure their learning and checking all their activities.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you
choose these rules?
 Come to class on time.
 Follow the rules and regulations inside the class.
 Wear proper uniform.
 Always wear I’d.
 No cheating during the exam.
I’m choosing those rules to discipline the students to be responsible and to
have a discipline to their selves.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

 Yes, the learners should be involved in the class rules so that they will be
aware of the do’s and don’t’s inside the room, and to make them know their
limitations when they are inside the classroom.
