REGULAR & IRREGULAR VERBS

Regular Verbs
Regular verbs which are used in present tense usually for the third singular (3rd) subject
such as, she, he and it.
1. The verbs which are ended by p, t, k, r, m, n, d, g, etc, the suffix is ‘s’
e. g. walk – walks get – gets
need – needs want – wants
2. The verbs which are ended by s, sh, ch, x, o, the suffix is ‘es’.
e.g. pass – passes go – goes
wash – washes box – boxes
3. The verbs which are ended by ‘y’ preceded by vowel, the suffix is ‘s’.
e.g. play – plays
4. The verbs which are ended by ‘y’ preceded by consonant, the suffix is ‘ies’.
e.g. try – tries fry – fries
fly – flies cry – cries
Regular verbs in the past & past participle are added by the suffixes ‘d , ed, or ied’.
1. The verbs which are ended by e, the suffix is ‘d’.
e.g. Agree – agreed advise – advised decide - decided
2. The verbs which are ended by p, t, t, k, l, m, n, d, s, ch, sh, etc, the suffix is ‘ed’.
e.g. walk – walked wash – washed
3. The verbs which are ended by ‘y’, preceded by vowel the suffix is ‘ied’
e.g. Study – studied try – tried
fry – fried cry – cried
4. The verbs which are ended by ‘y’ preceded by consonant, the suffix is ‘ed’.
e.g. Play - played

Irregular Verbs
Irregular verbs are different from the stem in their use in the past or the past participle.

e. g. drink drank drunk
eat ate eaten
take took taken
