Name: Aeron Joshua J. Carugda Date of Submission: 8/10/2020

Course: CE

Learning Outcomes:
 Identify the factors that block effective listening in communication
 Design relevant methods to mitigate the barriers of listening

Motivating Activity:
1. In the given scenarios, identify what barrier is present in each.
2. Answer the following questions:
Questions:
1. Describe each of the situations.
2. How are the situations different from each other?
3. What guided you in saying so?

class .

(Summarized from the Initial Activity Answer) As I said in the Initial Activity, (A) Mark had a difficulty
reading the book due to the honking from the vehicles outside. (B) Jana did not quite understand the lesson
probably due to not knowing the basic knowledge of the lesson. (C) Environmental barriers such as temperature
tells the minds of the students to keep focusing on how cold the room is. (D) Mr. Quirejero did not catch the
attention of the audience because of his terrible past background which is ex-convict.

Although they are all barriers, the scenarios show that they are a lot of ways to achieve barriers, but always
resulting to a bad communication.

I can identify a barrier in a communication if a receiver cannot decode the message or the messenger
cannot encode the message or there is an environmental distractions which both cannot communicate properly .

Enrichment Activity:

1. Listen to the following files.

2. In each file, identify what barrier is evident/present in the scenario.
3. Briefly describe what happened in each.
4. With each scenario, how do you think would this miscommunication be mitigated?

Open Module 2 folder and look for the files:

 ModuleWeek2_1 (the boy and the girl in a classroom)
As the Messenger (boy) of the scenario is trying to send a message to the receiver (girl), the girl is also
trying to be a messenger which disrupts the first topic of the conversation, this resulted to the boy being the
passive listener. The girl is clearly not interested of what the boy is trying to say. In-order to mitigate the situation
next time, they boy should try to have a strong intro hook to the receiver so the girl might listen first.

 ModuleWeek2_2 (The foreign lady passenger and the Taxi driver)

A lady called a cab/taxi, the driver then asked the passenger to where she’s going, but the passenger
cannot speak English not even a little, both the driver and the passenger did not understand each other which
lead to a miscommunication, Obviously this is a Cultural difference barrier. So, to mitigate the situation, the
driver can show a map or a mobile map with a simple hand gesture communication because most people can
understand it.
 ModuleWeek2_3 (The people trying to get drinks in the party)
Person1 is asking person2 on where to buy drinks but they seem to not hear each other very clearly
due to the loud music playing in the party, as soon as they understood each other they both have no idea
where so they asked another fellow (person3) and the same thing happened (not hearing each other), but
in a few tries they seem to understood and know where to buy drinks now. This is a physical setting barrier
or a facility problems which is the loud music trying to disrupt the conversation. They did mitigate the
situation which is having your voice louder and repeat if they did not hear or understand, it would help the
communication more and faster if they do hand gestures.

A funny clip where the father is trying to fix the chair but accidentally he stepped on an open bottle of
motor oil which spilled all over the carpet, now as they were trying to clean it up, the son got home and
responded angrily which lead to unnecessary insults and disbelief as the father is trying to explain that it was an
accident. This is an Emotion Barrier. To mitigate the situation, the son must understand that it was an accident,
and acted calmly.

Mr. Schwartz entered to attend an interview, he then approaches the secretary but the lady can’t
seem to pronounce the guy’s name properly, he kept trying but ended up being silent. A minute has
passed, the secretary then told that the interviewer is ready, but still the lady can’t hear or understand
what he is saying so he remained silent again and made the conversation awkward. This barrier is called
Silence as Agreement, the man ended up being silent because he seem to confuse the lady. He did well in
mitigating it, because he did not try really hard to her to understand him because it might get the situation
worse than it would be.

Insight:
1. Answer the following questions:
a. Provide a situation where you personally experienced any of the barriers.
b. How did you resolve the situation or if it wasn’t resolved, how would you have done it if given the
chance?

“TEACHING MY GROUPMATES HOW TO PAINT”

For me this is a good example of a communication having a barrier and how did I dealt
with the situation. (This was I think an Individual Make-up mixed with Lack of Know-how
barrier)Last year, I was asked to lead a painting group since the activity in the school
involved painting. So I tried my hardest to express my understanding on how to paint, but
my groupmates did not seem to understand and portray the things I said.

Later I realized that “Painting is easier said than done”, so I told them to paint with me
and follow the strokes and color I choose, I drew outlines for them to follow. At the middle
of the process I suspected that it is working so I kept going until the painting’s finished, and
the finished painting was a masterpiece therefore I guess we consider the
miscommunication problem resolved.
