1.0 INTRODUCTION

In this Industry revolution 4.0, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining is

very common in Malaysia because all the industries already use CNC machining machines
to manufacture their product. CNC machining is a manufacturing process that controls the
movement of factory tools and machinery by using computer software. So, in this task it is
required to review, report, and summarize the procurement studies on purchasing relevant
CNC machining and equipment to set up a machine shop laboratory. For this task, the
budget given to establish the machine shop laboratory is RM 13 million and the area of
(10*15) meter for this machine shop layout also provided. After the research and discussion
among group members, 6 different machines that consist of 2 types of machines have been
selected: NC conventional machines and advanced CNC machines. Nc machine is
controlled by a set of instructions in the form of numbers, letters, and symbols called a
program while the CNC machine is used to control the motions of the workpiece and tool
with a computer program that is written in alphanumeric data. The machine that has chosen
are Nc Control Hydraulic Automatic Surface Grinding Machine, CNC Water Jet Cutting
Machine, CNC Laser Cutting Machine, CNC Turning (ST-35LY), CNC 5-Axis Universal
Machining Centres (UMC-1600-H) and CNC Vertical Mill Machine (VR-14). All of the
information such as equipment, tools, specification, jigs and fixtures about these machines
will be shown in the next chapter.

3.0 KEY LEARNING POINTS

3.1 LAYOUT OF THE MACHINE SHOP

Figure 1 displays a machine shop layout with a 10-meter (width) by 15-meter

(length) space separated into two green and yellow floor areas. In compliance with the 5S
floor marking colour standard by OSHA requirements, the yellow colour is used as a
warning indication for work cell while green indicates the location of safety posters. This
area is occupied with one control room with 14 labour capacity, one conference area, two
toilets, one water dispenser, and six different types of machines. Table 1 lists the different
kinds of machines and their dimensions:

3.2 ESTIMATION COST

Cost estimate is the appraisal of the cost of a project, programme, or activity. The
goal of practising cost estimate is to prevent or minimise cost overruns. This is a critical
phase in ensuring the product's and company's profitability. To avoid going over budget, a
dependable, realistic, and accurate cost estimate must be performed. A cost estimator is the
person who does this function. This cost estimator is divided into three categories which
are fixed costs, variable costs, and other costs, all of these costs will be calculated over the
course of one year except for additional costs. Additional costs are costs that are paid in
one lump sum rather than on a monthly basis. Tables 2, 3, and 4 illustrate the spending by
category as well as the example of the cost calculation.

Table 3.2: Fixed cost for one year’s calculation

Fixed Cost (1 year)

Item Value (RM)

4.0 DISCUSSION

In this subchapter, the strength or advantages of the selected machines are being listed
below. To rise the stability, repeatability, and cutting accuracy of the ST-35LY CNC Lathe
Machine, Haas add bulk and ribbing in the headstock and tailstock of this turning center.
Moreover, most of the Haas CNC machines including VR-14 Vertical Milling Center and
UMC-1600-H Horizontal Milling Center are made from cast-iron instead of steel. Next,
the simple and easy of Haas’s control system is one of the advantages of this CNC machines
manufacturer compared to other CNC machines manufacturer. Furthermore, Haas offers a
solid control system that is fully integrated with the Haas CNC machine.

ST-FC1325 Stainless Steel Fiber Laser Cutting Machine is an efficient, precise and
stable CNC laser machine because the crucial components of this machine is equipped
from well-known manufacturers to ensure the quality of the machine. This machine is not
space-consuming and yet a reasonable laser cutting machine, especially for the small and
medium factory with a restricted factory workspace. Moreover, the WL2015 Waterjet
Cutting CNC Machine have the ultra-high pressure system which are able to narrow down
the energy consumption at maximum of 30 percent due to the low voltage start-up features.
On the other hand, the cutting platform is durable and can be bend for over 1 million times
thanks to the high quality towline and the special cables. Meanwhile for the MK7140A-2
NC Hydraulic Grinding Machine, these dependable devices is well-known for its little or
minor maintenance required and are simple to use. Other than that, in order to experience
a smooth and effortless hand feed, the hardened steel linear rails with precise balls was
used in the table methods.

5.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the quiz one was intended to review, report on, and summarise
procurement studies for CNC machines and equipment necessary to establish a machine
shop laboratory. Six CNC machines were purchased to equip the laboratory. However, the
Machine Shop Laboratory's layout is quite large, as it can accommodate six CNC machines
of varying dimensions. Additionally, because safety is paramount in the laboratory, a
yellow line is affixed to the line to indicate a caution, while a green line indicates a safety
work line. Furthermore, the estimated cost of setting up this laboratory is around RM
9,134,110. The estimation comprises fixed costs, variable costs, and other costs. Finally,
the machine's buying options are critical since the equipment must adhere to requirements
and safety regulations.
