TUTO WEEK 10 AND WEEK 11

Answer all the questions.

1. Ali sold 150 laptops in the year 2000. Each year he sold 10 more laptops than the
year before. He sold 160 laptops in 2001, 170 laptops in 2002, and so on forming
an arithmetic sequence.

a. Show that Ali sold 220 laptops in 2007

b. Calculate the total number of laptops Ali sold from 2002 to 2013 inclusive

2. Alia is demonstrating a series of experiments which involve using increasing

amounts of NaOH. In the first experiment she uses 6 g of NaOH and in the second
experiment she uses 7.8 g of NaOH.

a. Given that the amounts of NaOH used form an arithmetic progression, find
the total amount of NaOH used in the first 30 experiments

b. Instead it is given that the amounts of NaOH used form a geometric

progression. Alia has a total of 1800 g of NaOH available. Show that N, the
greatest number of experiments possible, satisfy the inequality

1.3N ≤91

And use logarithms to calculate the value of N.

3. A sequence u1, u2, u3, … is defined by

u1=4 and un+1= 2/un for n≥1

a. Write down the values of u2 and u3

b. Describe the behaviour of the sequence

4. Halimah Medispa Sdn. Bhd. offers a launching promotion. For every 2 friends
referred, the membership fee will be exempted. The spa expects to close the
promotion when they reach the 500th membership. Starting with only 1 member,
membership is targeted to grow at a rate of 12% daily. How long will the promotion
last?

5. A sequence u1, u2, u3, … is defined by
