Activity 2 - Rate
Express each rate in lowest terms.

Identify the following by filling the blanks.
1. It is the comparison of two quantities using of division ratio.
2. It is the number which can be used to express one quantity as a fraction of the other one ratio.
3. It can be described as a comparison of two numbers or quantities ratio.
4. The ratio should exist between the quantities of the same kind.
5. While comparing two things using ratio, there should be significant order of terms.
6. The comparison of two ratios can be performed, if the ratios are equivalent like the fractions.
7. A ratio is expressed in simplest form when both terms of the ratio are whole number.
8. It is a special ratio of two numbers with different units of measurement such as kilometers per
hour, words per minute, or price per kilogram rate.
9. When two quantities have the same unit of measure, their ratio has no unit of measure.
10. A rate like a ratio, is a comparison of two quantities, but the quantities may have different
unit of measures.

Solve the following. Show your solution in good form.

Answer the following questions.

1. A basketball team played 162 games and won 90.
a. What is the ratio of the number of games won to the number of games played?
90:162 = 5:9
b. For every nine games played, how many games were won?
9:90 = 1:10
2. A student did six out of 10 correctly.
a. What is the ratio of the number of correct answers to the number of wrong?
10:6 = 5:3
b. For every two answers that were wrong, how many answers were right?
2:10 = 1:5

3. The perimeter of a rectangular garden is 30 feet and the width is 5 feet. Find the ratio of the
length of the rectangle to its width in simplest form.
30=2(L+5) 10:5 = 2
30=2L+10
30-10=2L
L=10
In 4-7, in each case, fine the average rate of speed, expressed in miles per hour.

4. A businessman traveled 230 miles in 4 hours. 230/4 = 57.5 mi./hr.

5. A delivery truck delivered goods on a 9 miles route in 2 hours. 9/2 = 4.5 mi./hr.
6. A commuter drove 48 miles to work in 1½ hours. 48/1½ = 32 mi./hr.
7. A race car driver traveled 31 miles in 15 minutes (use 15 minutes - ¼ hour)
31/0.25 = 124 mi./min.
8. If there are 240 tennis balls in 80 cans, how many tennis balls are in each can?
240/80 = 3 tennis balls in each can
9. If an 11-ounce shaving cream costs ₱176.00, how much per ounce is the shaving cream?
₱176.00/11 = ₱16 per ounce of shaving cream
10. Ronald runs 300 meters in 40 seconds. Carlos runs 200 meters in 30 seconds. Who is the
faster runner for short races? Carlos is the fastest runner for short races
Ronald = 300/40 = 7.5 m/sec.
Carlos = 200/30 = 6.67 m/sec.

Solve the following problems:

11. Last month, your mother asked you to purchase a bottle of branded vitamins worth ₱280,
which she plans to consume for two weeks. After your mother has finished the bottle, you decided
to buy generic vitamins for another two weeks consumption of your mother. The generic vitamins
cost ₱56 a bottle. Find the ratio of the price of a branded vitamin to a generic vitamin.
₱280/2 = ₱140
₱56/2 = ₱28
₱140/₱28 = 5 the ratio of branded vitamin to generic vitamin

12. Liz and Beth are cousins and they have decided to become business partners. They have
agreed that Liz will invest ₱250,000, and Beth will invest ₱400,000. The profit from this business

half day’s work of 4 hours. Because their working hours vary, it is difficult to compare the wages
received by the two workers on the basis of their take-home pay for the day. However, a
comparison of their take-home pay is possible using a basic unit rate, which is their hourly rate.
So, what is their unit wage or rate per hour? Assuming worker A and worker B are doing the same
task and have no other difference in their working condition, who gets a better pay? (2 points)
A. ₱1,792/8 = 224 rate per hour
B. ₱1,500/4 = 375 rate per hour
Worker B gets a better pay
