Bande Ali Mia

Bande Ali Mia (18 January 1908 - 26 June 1989) was a renowned Bangladeshi poet, novelist,
children's writer, journalist and illustrator.

Birth and family


Bande Ali Mia was born in a lower middle class family in Radhanagar village of Pabna district.
Father Munshi Umed Ali was a low-ranking official of the Pabna Judge's Court.

Education and career


He passed matriculation from Majumdar Academy, Pabna in 1923, was admitted to Calcutta Art
Academy and passed 1st class. He joined Islam Darshan in 1925 as a journalist. He taught at
Calcutta Corporation School from 1930 to 1947. After the partition of the country, he came
close to Rabindra-Nazrul in Calcutta. About 200 of his books were published then. At that time,
his ballads and dramas recorded by various gramophone companies became very popular in the
Kolkata market. After 1984, he worked first for Dhaka Betar and later for Rajshahi Betar. In his
poems, he has introduced the art of describing the beauty of rural nature. He was perfect in
describing the nature. His children's books are still immortal today.

Honors
He was awarded the Bangla Academy Award in 1972 and the President's Award in 1985, and
the Uttara Sahitya Majlis Padak in Rajshahi in 1986 for his significant contribution to children's
literature. He was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak. In 1966, he was awarded the
Pride of Performance Award by the Government of Pakistan for his significant contribution to
literature.

Death
He died on 26 June 1969 in Rajshahi.
