revised by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry through deliberations at the
Japanese Industrial Standards Committee as the result of proposal for revision of
Japanese Industrial Standard submitted by Japan Bicycle Promotion Institute (JBPI)!
Japanese Standards Association (JSA) with the draft being attached, based on the
provision of Article 12 Clause 1 of the Industrial Standardization Law applicable to the
case of revision by the provision of Article 14. Consequently JIS D 9414: 2008 is
replaced with this Standard.

4.1 Constitution
Brakes shall consist of brake, brake lever and operating-force transmission. Indi-
vidual components shall be classified as follows. Brake levers shall not be used to build
brakes to be combined with a lever handle given in JIS D 9412.
5 Names of components
The names of brake components are as shown in Figures 1 to 8.
6 Construction
The construction of brakes shall be as follows.
a) Join parts firmly. Assembled brakes shall function correctly when activated.
--`,``,``,,,,,,`,,`,,`,`````-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
b) Brakes shall be designed to enable the driving force to be maintained through ad-
justment in the case of wearing of brake block/lining, elongation of cables, etc.
c) Use suitable friction materials for brake block, lining and pad. Do not use brake
materials containing asbestos.
Determine asbestos content as specified in clause 7 of JIS A 1481-2.
d) When inner cables are secured with the manufacturer's recommended tightening
torque, the securing position shall be designed to prevent cable from fracturing.
e) A frame/front fork of a calliper brake shall carry locking mechanism (e.g. spring
washer, lock nut) against loosening.
f) Brakes using hydraulic operating-force transmission shall be free from oil leakage.
g) Brake lever fitting shall be able to tighten the brake lever firmly on handlebars.
7 Performance
The performance of brakes shall be as follows.
a) Rim brakes, when mounted on a bicycle, shall comply with 5.2.5 of JIS D 9301 or
5.2.5 of JIS D 9302. Hub brakes, when tested according to 9.1, shall satisfy the
specified torque values of braking in the forward direction given in Table 2.
b) Run-out of each part of the hub brake, when tested according to 9.2, shall be as
given in Table 3. However, this specification does not apply to roller brakes.

drum of internal expanding brake
Lateral run-out (circumferential run-out in axial direction) at 5 mm 0.8 max.
inside the edge of disc brake
8 Strength
The strength of brakes shall be as follows.
--`,``,``,,,,,,`,,`,,`,`````-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
a) The breaking load shall be no less than 2 000 N in the joint of rim brake's front/rear
brake tubes and parts such as top joint, bottom swivel joint and bottom end lug.
b) When plunger and bottom rods are mounted on the top joint of front and rear brake
tubes as well as rod coupling, and when a force of 1 000 N is applied, there shall be
no slipping in the joint.
c) When the inner cable is tensioned while holding the end nipple, the cutting force
for cable and nipple shall be no less than 1 500 N.
d) When the inner cable is secured by the manufacturer's recommended tightening
torque and pulled by a force of 1 000 N, there shall be no slipping in the joint.
e) When a brake cable is tested according to 9.3, there shall be no displacement of
nipples or fracture of inner cable.
f) When the brake block and brake block holder of calliper brake/rim brake are se-
curely clamped, and tested according to 9.4, there shall be no cracks or displacement
from the holder.
g) When calliper brakes excluding cantilever brake are tested according to 9.5, the
brake arm and centre mounting bolt shall be free from cracks, fractures or signifi-
cant deformation.
h) Band brake shoe shall be free from fracture or significant deformation at its end,
when pinned at both ends and tensioned for 2 min at a force of 5 000 N for bicycle
for general use or that of 3 500 N for bicycle for young children.

10 Plating or painting
10.1 Plating
The plate thickness and corrosion resistance of plated part of the brake shall be at
least equivalent to Grade 2 in JIS H 8617 or JIS H 8610.
--`,``,``,,,,,,`,,`,,`,`````-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
The thickness of chrome plating shall be no less than 0.05 !-tm, regardless of the re-
quirements in JIS H 8617. However, this does not apply to plating on corners, threaded
portions, hexagonal rod spanner hole or any portions plated then processed.
10.2 Painting
The painted surface shall be free from breakage, when scratched with a pencil of lead
type F for the pencil scratch resistance test given in JIS K 5600-5-4.
11 Appearance
The appearance of brakes shall be as follows.
a) The plated surface shall be free from noticeable flows, exposure or incomplete pol-
ishing of substrate, peeling, rust or other significant defects.
The surface to be exposed after assembling shall be free from uneven plating.
b) Non-plated surfaces shall be free from rust, cracks, noticeable flaws, or other sig-
nificant defects.
c) Each surface shall be free from sharp tips, significant fins, burrs, etc.
d) Marks shall be free from incomplete stamping, positional deviation, irregular colour,
blur and other significant defects.
12 Designation of products
The designation of products shall be a combination of the number of this Standard
and the names of individual parts of the brake.
Example 1 brake composed of brake (band brake), brake lever (touring brake
lever), and operating-force transmission (cable system)
JIS D 9414, band brake, touring brake lever, cable system
Example 2 brake composed without brake lever
JIS D 9414, rim brake, rod system
13 Marking
