9 Test

9.1 Braking torque test

As shown in Figure 9, measure the braking torque with the inner cable pulled by the
test force F given in Table 2.
Conduct the tests after running sliding parts five times. For the brakes using hy-
draulic system of operating-force transmission, apply 1/2 of the test force given in
Table 2 at 25 mm from the end of the brake lever.
Use the manufacturer's recommended brake cables.

9.2 Measurement of brake run-out

For a band brake or an internal expanding brake, secure the drum on the measur-
ing jig, rotate the jig, and measure the radial run-out at the periphery of the drum or
its inner wall by using a dial gauge.
For a disc brake, secure the disc on the hub, rotate the hub, and measure the lateral
run-out at the position 5 mm inside from the periphery of the disc by using a dial gauge.

9.3 Fatigue test of brake cable

Mount the brake cable in a brake lever, and attach to a testing device having a cyl-
inder of radius 50 mm as shown in Figure 10. Hang a 15 kg weight at the end of the
inner cable. Pull the brake lever 100 000 times in a position shown in Figure 10, at a
stroke of 25 mm and a rate of 60 pulls per minute. Examine the nipple and the inner
cable visually for irregularities.
Prior to testing, the inner cable and an engaging part between the brake lever and
the nipple shall be coated with lubricant. Use the manufacturer's recommended brake
levers.

9.5 Fatigue test of brakes

Mount the brake on a fixture so that both brake block attachment parts are placed
parallel to each other, as shown in Figure 12. Apply simultaneously 10 000 cycles of
repetitive force of ± 200 N to the centres of both attachment parts at a rate of 30 cycles
per minute. Examine visually and tactilely for irregularities in brakes, centre mount-
ing bolts, etc.
