2.0 What this standard does not include / special considerations

This standard does not apply to non-metallic insert self-locking nuts.
Note that restrictions exist for fasteners for protective structures (e.g. ROPS) - please see external standard(s)
referenced from the relevant DVPSOR in GRP-025 – Engineering Sign Off – before selecting a fastener for that
purpose.

3.0 Concessions
Always consult electronic master. Paper copies are uncontrolled

In the case of a failure to conform to the requirements of this standard, a documented concession should be
generated following the requirements given in GRP-023. Suppliers should contact their JCB purchasing contact
to obtain a copy of the standard operating procedure covering concessions (GRP-023).

4.0 ‘Equivalent’ materials

Where the materials cited in this standard cannot be sourced then it is up to the individual business unit to
decide whether an alternative/equivalent material is acceptable.
The JCB Standards & Legislation department (S&L) should not be expected, nor asked, to make material
comparisons in this respect; this standard specifies or refers to recognised standards for materials.

5.0 AF sizes and disparities between external standards

This standard does not include conflicting across-flat (AF) dimensions from ISO standards, where these might
exist, but relies on those more usual AF sizes from BS / DIN standards.
Only those sizes quoted within this standard are recognised by the JCB Standards & Legislation department.

6.0 Demise or non-availability of products

The reduction of PhilidasTM nut production in Q1 2013 led to a complete rewrite of this standard at issue 04.

7.0 Current availability / selection

JCB part numbers can be found in the relevant nut style section within this standard.
Rules for the creation of new part numbers can be found in section 13.3.

8.0 Selection of nut grade

Nut grade should, ideally, be matched to the male threaded fastener grade
e.g. a grade 8 nut should be used with a grade 8.8 male
Note 1: Grade 10 nuts are not in common use at JCB - only in certain flanged nut types as introduced from issue 06 of this standard.
Note 2: The hardness of a grade 12 self-locking nut may damage a 10.9 male threaded fastener, so this combination should not be used.

9.0 Short-bolting
It is common practice, and therefore recommended, for at least two thread pitches to protrude through the nut
after tightening (ref STD00083).
Always consult electronic master. Paper copies are uncontrolled

10.0 Damage to coatings

The action of tooling (specifically impact-type) may damage the coating.
The prevailing torque element of the nut can damage / remove certain protective coatings from mating threads.
Either of these actions can lead to premature corrosion (compared with the corrosion resistance attributes
quoted in STD00017).
Prior to introduction to machine series production, coating suitability should be assessed by use of the intended
tooling, followed by salt spray testing. New tooling, processes and/or coatings shall return corrosion resistance
no worse than the system being replaced.

11.0 Torque for plain fasteners

STD00019 contains torque values for plain threaded fasteners (for general engineering purposes on rigid joints).

12.0 Prevailing Torque and self-locking nuts

Self-locking nuts specified within this standard shall conform to the common prevailing torque requirements
specified in ISO 2320 and DIN 267-15, reproduced in the table below:

13.0 Drawing and purchasing constraints

Nut styles
A host of self-locking nut styles are available, some being very similar in appearance to other well-known brands
but not all of these will conform to the relevant standards controlling manufacture and performance (e.g.
control of prevailing torque), hence, only nuts conforming to this standard shall be procured.

Procurement
In order to control conformity of supply, metric nuts should always be specified using the JCB part number with
a reference to this JCB standard and not by the manufacturer's name or nut trade name (the exception being
where a nut for a special application has to be procured from a particular supplier).
e.g. for a self-locking, Grade 8, M4 zinc and yellow nut the minimum information to be specified is:
"1370/9403Z in accordance with JCB STD00004"
Always consult electronic master. Paper copies are uncontrolled

Additional information, such as size and colour, may be added where relevant to assist the supply chain,
following the rules above.
Note: The previous edition of this standard contained purchasing restrictions to be only from the two types below, either:
1) PhilidasTM Standard Industrial or
2) Cleveloc low crown, low torque
However, with the scarcity of PhilidasTM product in 2013 the purchasing specification for all metal locking nuts is now changed from
'RESTRICTED' (to the two types cited above) to 'NO RESTRICTION ON THIS SERIES' (the proviso being that all metal self-locking nuts
procured must conform to the requirements of this standard).

New parts and part number allocation rules

New, standard parts, that would ordinarily append a table in this standard, shall be allocated a part number by
the JCB Standards & Legislation department only, following the part number sequences catalogued in JCB
Standards of the form ‘aaaa/bbcc’.
‘Off the clock’ numbers should only be used for ‘specials’ and only after consultation / agreement from the JCB
Standards & Legislation department.

14.0 Delivery condition

Parts must be cleanly finished and free from defects.
The finish must also be uniform in coverage across the fastener.
Parts must meet the requirements of ISO 6157-1 for damage and surface discontinuities at the point of use. If
the fastener has all permissible surface discontinuities present, it must still meet all requirements.
The requirements of ISO 6157 include:
- no quench cracks
- forging bursts, forging cracks, shear bursts, raw material seams and laps, voids, folds and tool marks in the
material must all be within specified limits

15.0 Point of use (lineside)

Bolted joint integrity
Considerable science is involved in the design of a bolted joint.
Unless all of the piece parts that make up a joint are to the required design state (material, finish, coating type,
additional lubrication or not, cleanliness, fastener types, applied torque…) there will be a risk to the integrity of
the joint (a car workshop manual might state ‘do not apply lubrication to the wheel nut threads’ it means just
that, in order to control the clamping load and integrity of the joint).

It is vital to maintain desired/designated friction coefficients in order to control the integrity of a bolted joint.
A reduction in the friction coefficient (e.g. by the addition of lubrication to threads) means a potentially
overtightened fastener which could fail prematurely:
- fasteners shall be stored in the condition they are required for use in the assembly
Always consult electronic master. Paper copies are uncontrolled

- no additional lubrication shall be applied to / removed from any part of the joint (nut, male fastener,
washers, joint surfaces, thread-lock) unless otherwise instructed by Design Engineering1
- different types or alternative supplies of self-locking nuts will produce differing prevailing torques and hence
will return differing clamping loads for the same applied torque
- fasteners in alternative coatings must not be used unless this is acceptable to Design Engineering1
- thread-locking compounds must not be used unless prescribed by Design Engineering1

Shortages
Where there is a shortage of a particular fastener, the use of any other finish colour (e.g. silver instead of
yellow) or the type (e.g. locking vs. non-locking) WILL affect joint integrity – consult Design Engineering1 for
prior-approval.

Internal threads (female) 6 H

COATED THREADS
16.2.1 ELECTROPLATED coatings
Medium class of fit (to DIN 13, ISO 965-2, BS 3643-2).
Always consult electronic master. Paper copies are uncontrolled

Electroplated threads, after plating, must meet the tolerance classes detailed in the following table.
Tolerance grade Tolerance position
Internal threads (female) 6 H
Samples offered for inspection must be coated.
As necessary, provision must be made by the supplier that non-coated samples also be supplied, in order that
the underlying fastener dimensions may be inspected / compared to the coated versions.

16.2.2 NON-ELECTROPLATED coatings (e.g. zinc flake)

When small fasteners are coated with an organic type coating (i.e. typically applied by a dip-spin type process)
the threads can become infilled by the coating and tightness to thread inspection gauges may be experienced,
hence standard inspection methods cannot be used.
Instead, smaller male threads (typically below M12) should be tested using an uncoated (or zinc plated) 6g bolt.
The male thread shall engage on the nut by hand and the maximum prevailing torque measured over 1.5d of
rotations shall not exceed d3/1000 Nm, where d is the nominal thread diameter.
Coating thickness shall not adversely affect the mechanical performance of the fastener or have an adverse
effect on normal installation practices.
