Soekarno's struggle
August 1, 1933, Bung Karno was arrested by the Dutch colonial police and thrown in Sukamiskin prison
for 4 months. February 17, 1934, Bung Karno was exiled to Ende (Flores) for 4 years, accompanied by
Inggit's mother, Ratna Djuwani, and Mrs. Asmi (father-in-law).
During this exile, Karno wrote many articles which were later published under the title "Islamic Letters
from Ende". March 9, 1943, Bung Karno and Bung Hatta, Ki Hadjar Dewantara, and KH Mas Mansyur led
the People's Power Center (PUTERA). June 1945, Bung Karno married Fatmawati. June 8, 1945, Bung
Karno was elected as chairman of the PPKI.
August 15, 1945, Bung Karno and Bung Hatta were kidnapped by youths and taken to Rengasdengklok to
be urged to immediately proclaim Indonesia's independence. August 17, 1945, Bung Karno and Bung
Hatta representing the people of Indonesia proclaimed Indonesia's independence, Friday, at 10.00 WIB
at the Pegangsaan Timur 56 building, Jakarta, followed by the hoisting of the Red and White flag sewn
by Mrs. Fatmawati, and the accompanying song "Indonesia Raya".
August 18, 1945, Bung Karno became President of the Republic of Indonesia.
June 21, 1970, Sunday Pahing, at 19.00 WIB, Bung Karno breathed his last at Gatot Subroto Hospital.
After a long period of suffering from kidney failure and being quarantined at Wisma Yuso. Bung Karno
died at the age of 69.
