SOEKARNO

Soekarno was born in Surabaya, June 6th 1901. Sukarno was born with the name
Kusno Sosrodihardjo . Soekarno is the son of a Javanese named Raden Soekemi
Sosrodihardjo, and his Balinese wife named Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai. After graduating
from a native primary school in 1912, he was sent to the Europeesche Lagere
School (a Dutch primary school) in Mojokerto. Subsequently, in 1916, Sukarno
went to a Hogere Burgerschool (a Dutch type higher level secondary school) in
Surabaya. In 1921, he began to study civil engineering at the Bandoeng Institute of
Technology, where he obtained an engineers degree in 1926.

In 1926, Sukarno founded Algemene Study Club in Bandung. This organization


became the embryo of the Indonesian National Party (PNI), founded in 1927.
Sukarno's PNI activity causes arrest in the Netherlands in December 1929. Sukarno
was arrested again in August 1933, and exiled to Flores. Here, Sukarno was almost
forgotten by the national figures. But his spirit still burning as implied in every
letter to a teacher of Islamic Unity named Ahmad Hassan. In 1938 until 1942
Sukarno was exiled to the province of new Bengkulu. Soekarno free return during
the Japanese occupation in 1942.

Bung Karno an important figure in the struggle for Indonesian independence. He


also the originator of the basic state called Pancasila. On 10 am, August 17, 1945,
Ir.Soekarno with Moh.Hatta declared the independence of the Republic of
Indonesia in front of a crowd of 500 people. Soekarno became Indonesia's first
president on 1945-1967.

Ir.Soekarno had nine wives. Of his marriage with Fatmawati, Soekarno was
awarded five children. One of the children named Megawati, also became the 5th
president of Indonesia.

Ir. Soekarno died on 21th June 1970 in Jakarta, when 69 years old. Because he
suffered from kidney disease. And was interred in Blitar, East Java.
