Established in 1960 and now located in Saint-Hubert (a suburb of Montreal, Canada), Paco has, since its
inception, specialized in the development of high-tech electromechanical equipment. Research and
Development (R&D) has always been at the heart of Paco’s success. The company’s main strength lies in its
ability to apply its inventions to machinery. Paco has patented multiple inventions and continues to innovate in
an ever-growing range of products.
Beside its durability, its precision and its incredible lifting capacity, the most striking characteristic of any Spiralift is
its compact height. The Spiralift, which is simple to install and operate, can be mounted easily on any sturdy,
load-bearing base with no requirement for free space underneath.
The Spiralift employs a coiled, flexible flat steel spring that expands with the insertion of a thin vertically oriented
spiral steel band. The result is a fully adjustable column formed of continuously integrated “I”-shaped sections. Its
stainless steel on stainless steel construction provides a long lifetime of trouble-free operations with minimal
maintenance.
Because the Spiralift is not hydraulic, it does not require a pump room or fluids that can leak or contract. It is
therefore not influenced by temperature and is completely stable. It is supremely quiet and can be used at any
time under the most noise-sensitive circumstances.
Spiralift units can be easily configured in modular designs to suit any platform geometry and building architecture.
Multiple units can be linked to the same drive train and be fully synchronized. They require modest power and
maintenance, yet provide substantial lift capacity.

MINIMUM LOAD REQUIREMENT – ND6
A minimum required load (MRL) ensures the integrity of the column under normal use and under moderate to
strong lateral acceleration. The MRL also ensures that an acceptable lateral force will not affect the Spiralift’s
supporting function. It can be reduced if the column is guided at mid travel or protected by guards.
The charts below show the MRL for ND6 Spiralifts as a function of the column stroke, which must be taken into
consideration when designing Spiralift applications. These figures are for preliminary studies only and should be
verified with PACO’s Engineering Department for your specific applications. For example, these figures can be
reduced significantly in multiple Spiralift devices or if a safety mechanism reduces the risk of failures under
exceptional conditions (safety brake, lock pins, etc).

MINIMUM LOAD REQUIREMENT – HD9
The minimum load requirement for the HD9 model is the same as the ND9 model. Refer to the charts of the
ND9 model to determine the minimum load to apply to the Spiralift as a function of the travel.
The Spiralift life for the HD9 model can be calculated using the ND9 life charts. The life of the HD9 can be
considered to be 25% more than the ND9 model due to better lubrication conditions and stronger internal
bearings.
The calculation for the number of cyles remains the same, once we used the charts for the ND9 :
The HD9 model main advantage over the ND9 model is that it will achieve its full life without the ND9
maintenance requirement (other than verifying oil quality & level) while the ND9 requires periodic cleaning and
lubrication. Also, the ND9 model may require minor parts replacement to continue working while these
components were replaced for stronger ones in the HD9 model. Therefore, no work is required on the unit
unless an abnormal condition occurs.

The 9 inch diameter (230 mm) model—our most popular to date—is compact
and can rise up to 20 feet (6 m) when fully extended. It can carry loads that will
satisfy most applications as it can be multiplied until the load per Spiralift is
within its capacity (see charts). Thousands of ND9 Spiralifts are currently being
used worldwide.

General Information
RECOMMENDED USE
Spiralifts are generally used to lift evenly distributed loads. They must be used in clean industrial areas where
they are isolated from excessive dust, humidity and dirt. The pit or lift area must remain clean at all times or
have the appropriate protection to ensure reliability and safety.
Spiralifts can lift very large loads. However, because of their size, they do so at much slower speeds than
closed elevators or hydraulic lift tables. Increasing the speed increases the required power and therefore
significantly increases the “closed” height of the system.
When appropriately equipped with safety devices, Spiralifts can lift people. Otherwise, the operator should
always stand clear of the platform and keeping it in sight during motion. No one should stand under the lift, and
all access should be restricted when the unit is in use. The Spiralift is extremely precise and powerful.
However, as with any other mechanical device, it is extremely important that it is not overloaded. It must be
operated without interference to avoid affecting the column during band insertion.
Some parts of the Spiralift turn freely during operation and must be checked regularly to avoid problems with
the drive system. Certain maintenance tasks are required, but must be performed by a certified Spiralift
technician only. Refer to the owner’s manual for specific maintenance procedures.
SELECTING A SPIRALIFT
Number of Spiralifts
The number of Spiralifts needed is based on the combined lifting and sustained capacity of each Spiralift. The
load must be evenly distributed on each Spiralift. The configuration of your structure and the location of each
Spiralift under it are therefore important. There is a potential tolerance of 0.1% in the manufactured pitch of a
Spiralift column. As adjacent Spiralifts travel together, a difference of loading conditions may occur due to the
difference in lifting heights. A common way to compensate for the loading difference consists in changing the
height and hardness of the rubber on the unit’s top plate. Consider this when choosing a top-plate design.
21
Minimum Required Load (MRL)
Determine whether your total load divided by the number of Spiralifts meets the MRL for each Spiralift.
Additional dead weight may be required for small lifts with high travels. Contact us for solutions in case of
problems.
Standard base plates are also provided and will accommodate a variety of drive setups. Once again, we offer
the option of integrating your own design.
22
SPIRALIFT SYSTEMS – DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
When designing a system with Spiralift, some design considerations must be kept in mind in order to make sure
the system will meet the specified durability, stability, performance and safety. Make sure you fully understand
these considerations before attempting to design a Spiralift system. PACO has technical bulletins that can help
you during the design process. A formal training may be required for some application, especially if the lifting
device is to be used with operators on or close to the system. There are numerous design considerations, for
example, in these categories :
Spiralift
Motors, and other drive components
Structure
Security
Controls
MOTOR
MOTOR

NOTE : To avoid damaging the units, problems or even injuries, request our Spiralift integration
training or contact us to get the Integration technical bulletin and all other bulletins you may need
for your specific application.
23
GUIDING REQUIREMENT
The lift must be equipped with a guidance system. Lateral force on the Spiralift must be avoided in order to
prevent band separation, although the bands are designed to support reasonable lateral force. The Spiralift does
not function under tension. Excessive eccentric load may cause tilting problems on multiple Spiralift tables. Do
not exceed the maximum point load specified. If the lift has to be moved, it must be handled with the locking
hooks provided or be supported from underneath. Pulling on the table floor or top deck could cause damage.
INSTALLATION
The installation of a Spiralift is simple, yet critical to proper and safe operation.
Never apply side loads to the column, do not operate the Spiralift without the minimum dead load required and
verify that both bands assemble correctly before loading the Spiralift. Avoid construction debris from falling in the
column and center of the Spiralift by covering it properly.
The Spiralift works vertically only and must be plumbed. While being plumbed, the guiding system must not jam
or bind during motion. To maintain safety, the column alignment must not be off by more than 1/16 inches (1.5
mm). To avoid misalignment from the outset, the base plate should be securely installed.
Prior to starting the Spiralift drive system, the magazines should be checked for rotation interference caused by
debris or other matter. (The ND6 & HD9 models don’t have a rotating magazine.)
For connection to the structure, the column can be raised by hand without additional guiding devices. Special
care is required. The column height should not exceed 4 feet (approx. 1.25 m). Work only at very slow speeds if
using the motor drive. Limit switches must be installed, even if they are to be relocated or adjusted
later on.
