OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD STARS
Most of the stars that we see in the night sky are billions of kilometres away. But there is one star which is much closer to
the Earth. We see it every day as a large, bright ball in the sky. It is called the Sun. It is the only star in our solar system. It gives us
heat and light. Without the Sun there would be no life on our planet.
The nearest star outside the solar system is called Alpha Centauri. It is bigger and hotter than the sun. It looks much smaller
because it is very far away. It takes four years for light to reach us from Alpha Centauri. The Earth is only about eight light minutes
away from the Sun.
The Sun isn’t our nearest neighbour in space. The moon is just 380,000 km away. It is the only part of the solar system that

VII. Read the text MAN’S BEST FRIEND and answer the questions:
The British are a nation of animal lovers. Most people in Britain will at some time or another have a pet.
If there are children in the house, they will definitely want to have a dog, a cat, a rabbit or some other pet such as guinea pig, goldfish or hamster.
At Christmas time the pet shops are very busy selling baby dogs and cats (puppies and kittens) but sadly, children will often play with them for a
couple of weeks and then get bored.
But a pet is not just for Christmas, it’s for life. If you have a large dog, for example, you must be sure to take it out at least three times a day as it
needs a lot of exercise. You should feed it properly and take it to the vet regularly. If you look after your dog properly, your dog will look after
you. They say that a dog is man’s best friend and in many cases it’s true.
Cats, on the other hand, are more independent and not so friendly. Some are lazy and just sleep inside all day but there are others who like being
outside. They will go to anyone who feeds them, so if your neighbour puts food or milk outside for them, you shouldn’t be surprised if you don’t
see your cat from one day to the next.
So, if you decide to buy an animal, you must be sure that you are going to have enough time and money to look after it properly.
