CHAPTER 1

 Community identify as forged not only within a


geographic territory but also due to the relationships
and bonds formed by individuals of shared values,
interest, and goals.
 Defining and characterizing communities can be done
using various perspective-social sciences, institutional,
civil society, and organic. Each of these perspectives
emphasize particular features, attributes, dimensions,
and characteristics which allow us to analyze,
understand, and appraise communities.
 Communities have geographic, socio-political,
economic, and cultural dimensions.
 Communities can be categorized according to its
formal-informal features, rural-urban
characteristics, local-global distinctions, and the
characteristics viewed from community-based
organizations.
 Communities perform the following functions:
Production-distribution and consumption,
socialization, social control, social participation,
and mutual support.

CHAPTER 2
 Community engagement refers to the process of
collaboratively working with individuals and groups of
people who associate and affiliate themselves based on
common attributes, geographic proximity, or
special interest.
 Solidarity is the idea of unity or feeding of
agreement among individuals with a common
interest. It is a result of an individual’s decision to
give greater importance to collective interest than self-
interest.
 Communities confront the challenges they face
through community action.
 Citizenship confers to an individual some form of
status with rights and duties. It reminds us that, as a
citizen of a community, individuals do not only enjoy
certain privileges and rights but also have duties and
responsibilities to contribute to the community’s
wellbeing through community engagement.
 Community development is a process where members
of a community act as a collective to solve and address
community problem and issues.
 Community issue are subject matters of concern to
which the community accords attention.
 Community issues are different from community
problem, which are persistent, disruptive, and
undesired conditions of issues related to community
life.
 Community problems have diverse impacts on the
community, depriving them of certain preferences,
benefits, rights, and civil liberties. Marginalized and
vulnerable communities are susceptible to community
problems as basic social services are unavailable.
Communities such as these require interventions for
community action and development to uplift their
quality of life.
 Community action is essential in addressing problems
and ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of
community members.
