o Try this!
A student listed 10 of his classmates’ scores: 34, 42, 27, 34, 45, 32, 31, 44, 33, 31.
Calculate the mean, median, mode and weighted Mean.

MEAN = 34+42+27+34+45+31+44+33+31 ÷ 10
= 353 ÷ 10
= 35.3

MEDIAN = 33+34 ÷ 2 MODE= 31 and 34

= 67 ÷ 2
= 33.5

WEIGHTED MEAN:
N= Σ(x•w) Σw
= 1(27) +2(31) +1(32) +1(33) +2(34) +1(42) +1(44) +1(45) ÷ 10
= 27+61+32+33+68+42+44+45 ÷ 10
= 352 ÷ 10
= 35.2

o Try this!
The following data shows the results of 5 students in a 50-item multiple choice
exam: 47, 36, 42, 35, 33. Compute the range, and standard deviation and
variance.

Answer:

Step 1. The mean of the number is

X= 47+36+42+35+33 = 193 = 38.6

5 5
Step 2. For each number, calculate the deviation between the number
and the mean.

X x-x

47 47 - 38.6 = 8.4

36 36 - 38.6 = -2.6

42 42 - 38.6 = 3.4

35 35 - 38.6 = -3.6

33 33 - 38.6 = -5.6

Step 3. Calculate the square of each deviation in Step 2, and find the
sum of theses squared deviations.

X x-x (x-x) ²
47 47 - 38.6 = 8.4 (8.4)² = 70.56
36 36 - 38.6 = 2.6 (-2.6)² = 6.76
42 42 - 38.6 = 3.4 (3.4)² = 11.56
35 35 - 38.6 = -3.6 (-3.6)² = 12.96
33 33 - 38.6 = -5.6 (-5.6)² = 31.36
Σ (x-x)² = 133.2

Step 4. Because we have a sample of n = 5 values, divide the sum

133.2 by n – 1, which is 4.
= 133.2
4

= 33.3

Step 5. The standard deviation of the sample is √33.3. To the

nearest hundredths, the standard deviation is s = 5.87 and the
variance is 33.3.
o Assessment
Solve the following:

1. A Teacher gave a quiz to his Mathematics class. Eight of the students scored: 2
pts. each
73 82 64 61 63 52 73 70.

Find the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation and variance

1. MEAN = sum of all numbers

n

= 73 + 82 + 64 + 61 + 63 + 52 + 73 + 70
8

= 538
8

MEAN = 67.25

2. MEDIAN = 64 + 70
2

= 134
2
MEDIAN = 67

3. Mode - 73 82 64 61 63 52 73 70.

MODE = 73

4. Range = 82 – 52

RANGE = 30
5. Standard Deviation and Variance:

Step 1. The mean of the number is

X = 73 + 82 + 64 + 61 + 63 + 52 + 73 + 10

X = 538
8

= 67.25

Step 2. For each number, calculate the deviation between the

number and the mean.

x x-x
73 73 – 67.25 = 5.75
82 82 – 67.25 = 14.75
64 64 – 67.25 = -3.25
61 61 – 67.25 = -6.25
63 63 – 67.25 = -4.25
52 52 – 67.25 = -15.25
73 73 – 67.25 = 5.75
10 70 – 67.25 = 2.75
Step 3. Calculate the square of each deviation in Step 2, and find the
sum of theses squared deviations.

X x-x (x-x) ²

73 73 – 67.25 = 5.75 (5.75)² = 33.0625

82 82 – 67.25 = 14.75 (14.75)² = 217.5625

64 64 – 67.25 = -3.25 (-3.25)² = 10.5625

61 61 – 67.25 = -6.25 (-6.25)² = 39.0625

63 63 – 67.25 = -4.25 (-4.25)² = 18.0625

52 52 – 67.25 = -1525 (-15.25)² = 232.5625

73 73 – 67.25 = 5.75 (5.75)² = 33.0625

70 70 – 67.25 = 2.75 (2.75)² = 7.5625

Step 4. Because we have a sample of n = 5 values, divide the sum

591.5 by n – 1, which is 4.

= 591.5
4

= 147. 875

Step 5. The standard deviation of the sample is √147.875. To the

nearest hundredths, the standard deviation is s = 12.26 and the
variance is 147.875.
2. Mr. Jaro runs to keep himself physically fit. He wants to know
if there is a relationship between the time lapsed and the kilometers
he ran. Calculate Pearson correlation coefficient:

Complete the table and solve for r and give your interpretation:
