Documentary Analysis

The film "Daughters of Destiny" follows the students of an Indian school that are working
to end their generation's cycle of poverty. The seven-year monitoring project involving the
students of the Shanti Bhavan school in Tamil Nadu has been fascinating due to the
students' outspoken participation. It is our sincere wish that this will encourage young
people to take advantage of the many advantages offered by quality educational
institutions. It is not, however, a matter of chance that one is able to attend university. A
new generation is facing questions of fate and free will as they explore a future
inconceivable to their ancestors.

There will be many challenges to overcome before they succeed, but I have faith that with
the support of their friends, this organization will thrive regardless. Thenmozhi, aged
seven, is a talkative sprite with the mandatory pixie cut who aspires to "a job called...
science." Manjula, a 14-year-old, studies hard for her upcoming exams because she
knows that her family's financial stability depends on her getting a good job and keeping
them out of debt. While Preetha, like many other young people, aspires to a career in
music, she has difficulty concentrating on the more academically demanding aspects of
her studies. She needs to get a real job soon, but she can't stop singing "California
Dreamin'" in preparation for the graduation show. While her father was against Shilpa
going to Shanti Bhavan because she was a girl, her mother was against the decision. She
provides narration for the show like a Carrie Bradshaw from Tamil Nadu who aspires to
be a reporter. So, it's clear that she has talent as well. To help the people of her village
reclaim their land, Karthika would like to become a human rights lawyer.

In the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a group of underprivileged children from rural India
attend the Shanti Bhavan residential school. The sound design is top-notch. The
documentary style of the filming is excellent. Interviews are my preferred medium
because the interviewees can be whoever they want to be and are free to express
themselves honestly. The fact that they are able to find happiness despite their
circumstances strengthened my conviction that the solution to any problem is to focus on
one's own happiness.
