Title of the Reading: Jose Rizal and the Invention of a National Literature

1. What is the reading all about?


 As the title literally mean it, the article is all about Jose Rizal, his literary works when he was
young until the last moments of his life, as well as his part in the invention of National
Literature. For instance, he won the first prize of an essay-writing in manila with the literary
piece entitled El Consejo de los Dioses. More so, the article talks about Rizal’s early times
with the propaganda movement. It was tagged as ‘assimilationist’ movement because they
were aiming for reform, autonomy, and equity. Rizal and the other significant people were
affected to tragic happenings in the Philippines during Spanish era, in response, they used
literary as a means of propaganda. Through writings, they revealed abuses, struggles,
corruption, etc. Dr. Rizal took the leading position in this, particular to the shift of pre-
nationalism to true nationalism, and the making of path to a national literature.
2. What did you learn from the article?
 In the article, I learned that a person’s literature must come from their history, with
inclusion of social, psychological, and linguistic resources. I also learned how Dr. Jose Rizal
put such effort in terms of studying and researching about Filipino cultures and local
languages for national unity.
3. How does the article relate to the lesson?
 The article has a direct relevance in our lesson which is about Dr. Jose Rizal. In here, his part
in the Philippine Literature or National Literature was tackled. He was also known as the
father of Filipino Nationalism due to his contribution in forging a path for national literature.
4. How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?
 The literary compositions of Rizal and the other significant people with him, the pushing of
national literature, the national unity, and the other acts of Rizal is truly admirable. It’s a
true example of prioritizing your own nation above all else. That is why I take pride in being
a Filipino. And I’m proud of my fellowmen’s achievements like Rizal’s achievements in the
area of literature.
5. How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
 Patriotism develops and/or promotes to me by the truth that Rizal and the Ilustrados
writings to expose the abuses, injustice, and inequity of Spaniards among Filipinos are
patriotic. It is an act of courage to awaken the people, to protect and defend this country
which they are loyal with.
6. How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?
 Rizal’s willingness and voluntary act of serving his country is really inspiring. He actually have
the choice to not meddle with government’s affairs, he can do nothing about the abuses and
such. But he chose to volunteer his life giving service to this country.

Title of the Reading: The Rizal Bill of 1956: Horacio de la Costa and the Bishops

1. What is the reading all about?


 Basically, the article is about Rizal’s Bill of 1956 and the survived drafts of Horacio de la
Costa for the Bishops. In the drafts listed were pointing that Rizal is indeed a true patriot and
compassionate Filipino devoted to his country. Another discussion in the article is about the
controversial ‘statement’ and what appears like opposition of the Catholic Church for Rizal’s
law. Yet, in 1955, the good statesman Senator Claro M. Recto proposed that all schools in
the Philippines teach students about the life and works of Jose Rizal. In 1956, the bill was
passed and is now known as Republic Act 1425, or Rizal Law. The official title of the law is
much longer: An Act to Include in the Curricula of All Public and Private Schools, Colleges
and Universities Courses On the Life, Works and Writings of Jose Rizal, Particularly His
Novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, Authorizing the Printing and Distribution
Thereof, and for Other Purposes.
2. What did you learn from the article?
 In the article, I learned that Rizal is our national hero not just because of his analyzation to
the country’s problems, nor because he was executed, nut because he’s a moral teacher and
gives a moral example. By reading this article, I also learned more things and qualities about
Rizal that I have yet to know.
3. How does the article relate to the lesson?
 The article, which is about the Rizal bill of 1956 is greatly associated in the lesson because
this is one of the reason that we are here studying about Rizal’s life and works. In the drafts,
qualities that Rizal possess we’re outlined saying and proving that he, indeed deserves the
appreciation from the past, now, and until the future generations.
4. How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?
 In the article, it was mentioned that Rizal, by universal consent, is first among Filipinos who
have distinguished themselves for service to their country. His novels were said to develop
in the youth "a sane and constructive nationalism". And from that, nationalism develops
and/or promotes to me in way that it integrates in my being. I felt like it is in my blood and
heart to put my country above the others.
5. How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
 In the draft, I read that Rizal possessed to an eminent degree moral virtues that make up
true patriotism. Through his love and devotion to this country, he awakened the ignorance
of his co-Filipinos and raised their morals, as well as battled with the abuses, injustices, etc.
during the Spanish regime. That is why, through my own patriotism I’m going to study well
in this course, get to know and learn more about Rizal, preserve his teachings and will
always be grateful and inspired.
6. How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?
 Volunteerism appeal to me in a way that, because I have read Rizal and understand his
voluntary choice of serving his country, it makes me want to do volunteerism in my
community. Even in my own simple ways. It is because, what Rizal did was very ideal.
