Chapter 47 talks about an argument of two Doña’s. One day, Doña victorina and his husband don
tiburcio were roaming around the streets just to belittle and make fun of the Filipino’s or the so what
we called Indio’s and their houses. Their fancy outfits is not being noticed by the villagers so they've
decided to go home. On their way home they've encountered Doña consolacion, and Doña
consolacion split in front of them. They've had an argument on how disrespectful Doña consolacion to
them despite their privileged living royalties. Doña Victorina is mad because Doña consolacion is not
being bothered or scared to them. They've ended up having an argument that cause people to surround
them. Doña victorina tried to enter don consolacion’s house but then a guard stopped her. She then
told Doña consolacion that having an argument with them only descends their honour. Donya
consolacion replied that they know her well together with her company which is her husband don
tirbucio and she knows their secret really well. This causes don victorina to heat up and tell Doña
consolacion to get out of her house and face them. And so Doña consolacion go out of her house
holding a rod but her husband stepped in and stop them. They continue to argue until a padre stop
them which is padre salvi. They only stop fighting until padre salvi go in between to stop them. After
the ceasefire, doña victorina then tell to his husband to go out and tell Kapitan Heneral the current
scenario they’re in. She then get mad at his husband and underestimated his masculinity and she told
don tiburcio to challenge them in a way of salbe or rebolber. This chapter teach us that the contempt
and humiliation of the fellow should not be done by anyone.
ANALYSIS
b. Interpretation of your Junior High School Teacher for this Chapter
During my Junior High School, our teacher interpreted this Chapter in a way that she
emphasized how people treat each other back then. According to my teacher, there are people
in the past, specifically during the time of the Spanish regime, who looks at themselves so
highly. One example of this is Dona Victorina. She married a Spaniard and take it upon
herself that she is very important and powerful. She likes being recognized by the way she
was dressed and she feels disgusted by those who doesn’t bow down to them or give courtesy
for respect. She’s a kind of person who’s over her head and thinks that she would get what
she wants. In this chapter there is also a person who shows some jealousy and therefore act
mannerlessly, that’s Dona Consolacion for example. Dona Consolacion is a former
washerlady who also married a Spaniard. So in this chapter, my junior high school teacher
showed us that the example of the characters above thinks that they are very well recognized
in the society which resulted to unnecessary circumstance like mockery, insults, and fight
against each other. We can also see that boasting or the excessive pride to one’s self won’t do
any good.
