ABSTRACT

Chapter 47 talks about an argument of two Doña’s. One day, Doña victorina and his husband don
tiburcio were roaming around the streets just to belittle and make fun of the Filipino’s or the so what
we called Indio’s and their houses. Their fancy outfits is not being noticed by the villagers so they've
decided to go home. On their way home they've encountered Doña consolacion, and Doña
consolacion split in front of them. They've had an argument on how disrespectful Doña consolacion to
them despite their privileged living royalties. Doña Victorina is mad because Doña consolacion is not
being bothered or scared to them. They've ended up having an argument that cause people to surround
them. Doña victorina tried to enter don consolacion’s house but then a guard stopped her. She then
told Doña consolacion that having an argument with them only descends their honour. Donya
consolacion replied that they know her well together with her company which is her husband don
tirbucio and she knows their secret really well. This causes don victorina to heat up and tell Doña
consolacion to get out of her house and face them. And so Doña consolacion go out of her house
holding a rod but her husband stepped in and stop them. They continue to argue until a padre stop
them which is padre salvi. They only stop fighting until padre salvi go in between to stop them. After
the ceasefire, doña victorina then tell to his husband to go out and tell Kapitan Heneral the current
scenario they’re in. She then get mad at his husband and underestimated his masculinity and she told
don tiburcio to challenge them in a way of salbe or rebolber. This chapter teach us that the contempt
and humiliation of the fellow should not be done by anyone.

ANALYSIS
b. Interpretation of your Junior High School Teacher for this Chapter
During my Junior High School, our teacher interpreted this Chapter in a way that she
emphasized how people treat each other back then. According to my teacher, there are people
in the past, specifically during the time of the Spanish regime, who looks at themselves so
highly. One example of this is Dona Victorina. She married a Spaniard and take it upon
herself that she is very important and powerful. She likes being recognized by the way she
was dressed and she feels disgusted by those who doesn’t bow down to them or give courtesy
for respect. She’s a kind of person who’s over her head and thinks that she would get what
she wants. In this chapter there is also a person who shows some jealousy and therefore act
mannerlessly, that’s Dona Consolacion for example. Dona Consolacion is a former
washerlady who also married a Spaniard. So in this chapter, my junior high school teacher
showed us that the example of the characters above thinks that they are very well recognized
in the society which resulted to unnecessary circumstance like mockery, insults, and fight
against each other. We can also see that boasting or the excessive pride to one’s self won’t do
any good.

c. Reflections of the issue in the chapter to Modern Society

i. Existence of the Literary Dilemma in the modern society
There are dilemmas in this literary work of Dr. Rizal that is still applicable in the
modern society. One example of this is when Doña Victorina insulted the indios just
because she thinks that she’s better than them. We know that at the present time, there
are people who seems economically and financially better than others and because of
this there were times that these people mock or insult the poor just because they can.
Also, the literary dilemma when the two ladies or señoras quarrelled, it reflects some
happenings nowadays. For instance, the people like Doña Victorina and Doña
Consolacion are examples that people of the same social status are those who feel ill
with each other. More so, the showed manipulation of Doña Victorina when she
blackmailed Linares into challenging the Alferez to a duel which if Linares doesn’t
comply, Doña Victorina will expose his lies. It can be seen until now, a person who
holds power can manipulate someone just to do as he/she wishes.
ii. Implied topic covered in this chapter
The topic implied in this chapter is how the two Doña’s carries themselves with so
much pride and power that they forgot to keep their feet on the ground. Also, this
chapter can be implied to what is happening in our political society. For instance,
there is no longer a saying that ‘Blood is thicker than water’ because in order to
obtain a position in the government, families fight each other for power. The two
Doña forgot how it is like to be fair and act in the right manner, because they both
experience to get the power they thought they are so ahead of others. We can also see
that the social class and culture in past and until now, lies upon a person’s affiliations.
We know that these two Doña married Spaniards, which upon that time holds power
in the society.
d. Personal reflection
Based from this chapter, I learned a lot from what happened in the past that still continually
happen as of today. I learned that when someone holds power they tend to abuse it or use it to
downgrade other people. Because of the power they got from their personal connections, their
heads become larger. They become boastful and they forgot how it is like to be humane. Not
everyone holds power in the society particularly here in the Philippines. The rich and the
famous holds power while the poor people are in the bottom of the social class. There are
news and stories in our society that is similar to the Chapter 47 or the Two Doñas. For
instance, people who have positions in the government abuse their power by corrupting their
constituents. Also, there are rich people who doesn’t like to be outshined or overpowered by
others that’s why instead of helping the poor people they tend to abuse them just to become
richer and richer and prolong their power in the society. Jealousy is also very common among
these people, for example if they saw a friend or a close acquaintance get/purchased a high-
class and limited edition bag that cost extravagant, they would also purchase the kind just to
say she’s on trend and updated. This jealousy would not have a positive effect, instead
jealousy from other people will just cause hatred, mockery, insults, and negative
circumstances leading to unnecessary fights. That is why I also think that reading this chapter
is vital. We can learn a lot from this and we can relate this to our present times. We can make
this as a guide to keep our heads steady and our feet on the ground. This reminds us that it is
still better to act in the right manner in order to gain respect and to constantly be humane
instead of always trying to be on top and stepped down on others.
