Yarn count
⚫ The yarn count is a numerical expression which
defines its fineness or coarseness.
⚫ It also expresses weather the yarn is thick or
thin.
⚫ According to the textile institute yarn count is a
number of indicating the length per unit weight
or weight per unit length of the yarn.
⚫ The fineness of a yarn is known as a count of a
yarn.
⚫ also known as the linear density of the yarn.

Types of Yarn Count

⚫The direct system is calculated with the

formula N = (W/l) / (L/w).
⚫The indirect system uses the formula:
N = (L/w) / (W/l).
⚫In these formulas, N is the yarn count, W
is the weight of a sample of yarn,
⚫l is the unit of length, L is the length of the
sample, and w is the unit of weight.

Indirect system Ne (English Cotton Count) and Nw
(Worsted count)
⚫ is the number of 840 yards lengths per pound.
⚫ It is the number of hanks of skein material that weighs 1
pound.
⚫ It means that 40 Ne cotton = 40x840 yards yarn in 1
pound
⚫ In this system, the higher the number, the finer the yarn.
⚫ A regular single-knit T-shirt can be between 20 and 40
count; fine bed sheets are usually in the range of 40 to 80
count.
⚫ The number is now widely used in the staple fiber
industry.
⚫ NW is the number of 560 yards hank lengths per 1 pound
of yarn. It is an indirect measure of linear density.

⚫ It means that 40 Nw = 40x560 yards in 1 pound

Count calculation for ply yarn
1. A two ply yarn in Tex is composed of one thread 40 Tex,
one thread unknown count and has a resultant count of 100
Tex. What is the count of the other component yarn?

2. A resultant two ply yarn count of 16s has one

component yarn of 36s. What is the count of the other
component?

Problems
⚫What do you know about 40 Ne, 40 Nw,
40 Tex, 40 Denier and 40 Lbs/ Spyndle?
⚫You want to produce 30 yards of 300 Ne
cotton yarn. What amount of cotton fiber is
required to you?
⚫ Mr. X has 60 Ne cotton yarn, Mr. Y has 60
Tex polyester yarn and Mr. Z has 60
Denier Spandex yarn. Who has the finest
yarn? Write comments on it.
