FT8 GAS TURBINES: RECOMMENDED LUBE &

HYDRAULIC OIL SAMPLING

J. McCormick
Last Rev: 10/3/03

GAS TURBINE LUBE OIL SYSTEM:

Governing document: PWPS Service Bulletin No. 6, last revision “U”

Limits:
Kinematic Viscosity @ 100 degrees F:
Max change from new oil level is +25% to –10%
Total Acid No: 2.0 maximum

Sampling intervals: Every 500 hours of gas turbine operation (including

synconuous condensing operation), but reduce to 100 hours of operation if oil
degradation limits are approached.

Change of Oil: No set interval. Change when properties are at limits.

For units that operate less than 500 hours per year, sample annually.

Sampling port: Oil tank drain valve, GG gearbox drain port, or oil tank fill port.
Sample should be taken as soon as possible after gas turbine is shutdown.

Optional sampling: (Reference PWPS Service Bulletin 98M01)

Gas turbine is protected by pressure side lube filters (both GG & PT), but
this monitoring will help maintain the ancillary equipment in the lube oil
skid enclosure.

Total solids: 50 ppm maximum

Particulate Size: ISO4406 Cleanliness Code of 18/16/14 be maintained
(this is a revised code since issuance of SB 98M01)
Water content: 1000 ppm maximum
Nominal Specific Gravity (for reference): 1.0044

ELECTRIC GENERATOR LUBE OIL SYSTEM:

Governing document: Brush Electric Generator Manual

Limits:
Kinematic Viscosity (cSt @ 40 degrees C / 100 degrees C: 30.4/5.1
Total Acid No: 1.6 maximum
Total solids: 50 ppm maximum

Homepage Previous Document

Particulate Size: ISO4406 Cleanliness Code of 16/14 be maintained
Water content: 50 ppm maximum
Nominal Specific Gravity (for reference): 0.867

Sampling Interval: Every 6 months (independent of operating hours)

Change of Oil: Every 20,000 hours operation or 30 months, which ever occurs
first.

HYDRAULIC START PAC SYSTEM:

Governing document: Berendsen Fluid Power Manual

Limits for hydraulic fluid:

Kinematic Viscosity (cSt @ 40 degrees C / 100 degrees C: 33/6.3
Total Acid No: 2.0 maximum
Total solids: 50 ppm maximum
Particulate Size: ISO4406 Cleanliness Code of 16/14 be maintained
Water content: 50 ppm maximum
Nominal Specific Gravity (for reference): 0.876

Sampling Interval: Every 3 to 6 months (independent of operating hours)

Change of Oil: No set interval. Change when properties are at limits. But every
6 months the reservoir should be drained and inspected for silt or sludge. The
cleanout doors should be removed and the reservoir cleaned by hand with a
solvent or light oil.

GENERAL NOTE: The above recommendations are based on data from Vendors and
PWPS documents. The PWPS documents and Vendor documentation on these systems
take precedent over this material.
