Environmentally Acceptable Hydraulic Fluids HETG, HEPG, HEE for Axial Piston Units
General Notes The fluid in a hydraulic circuit must be carefully selected as soon as possible in the design stage of the project in order to achieve reliable and economic operation of the system. All requirements cannot be met simultaneouslyfor example, on a price basisand the user must therefore carefully weigh the various factors involved. The viscosity and the viscosity/temperature coefficient are of primary importance, as are the density and the pour point. For a short time at start-up, a viscosity of (below) is permissible. Start 4640 SUS (1000 mm2/s) For some products viscosity limit up to 7425 SUS (1600 mm2/s) is permissible. See product data sheet for details. The operational limits of viscosity which must be guaranteed for full functionality of the system at 100% duty are: Operating = 75465 SUS (16...100 mm2/s) For maximum efficiency and economy, the limits of viscosity are: opt = 74167 SUS (16...36 mm2/s) Incomplete lubrication (and associated friction and wear) starts to occur at: min 45 SUS (10 mm2/s)
Viscosity v mm2/s (SUS)

In order to guarantee a long service life for the installation, good and reliable filtration is necessary. Primary prevention of in-built dirt, such as the cleaning of components, filling filters and air breathers, do not prevent a build up of contaminants in the system due to marginal lubrication and wear in clearances, erosion and the fatigue of rolling bearings. The hard particle contamination of fluid may not exceed a level determined by: Class 9 to NAS 1638 Class 6 to SAE Class 18/15 to ISO/DIS 4406 The required degree of cleanliness may normally be achieved by the use of filters having a retention rate of 20 100. In open circuits, high pressure and/or return line filters should be used with all three types of fluids (see pages 34). In closed circuits either a boost pressure line or boost suction line filter should be fitted. Due to the high density of polyglycol fluids, it must be particularly noted, that the pressure at the suction port of the pump may not fall below the minimum permissible level. This is of particular importance with filtration in the suction line. Selection diagram

In order to match the viscosity to the various viscosity indices, fluids of different viscosities are available. These vary between 102 and 316 SUS (22 and 68 mm2/s), taken at a temperature of 104 F (40 C). Normal HLP hydraulic oils have a viscosity index of approximately 100 (see selection diagram). HVLP hydraulic oils and multi-grade engine oils have a viscosity index of more than >140 and are therefore suitable for greater temperature range (mobile applications). Environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluids known at the present time have viscosity indices greater than >130 and values up to 220 may be achieved. In order to determine the degree of wear protection provided by a particular fluid and the permissible operating pressure range, the FZG-Normal test A/8, 3/90 (gear wear test) is used. In this test, it is necessary to achieve a wear rating 10 in order to state that the pressure rating need not be reduced (DIN 51354).

Note:
In common with normal petroleum oils, environmentally acceptable fluids need to be

disposed of carefully.
In addition to the guide lines and notes issued by the manufacturers, the various laws and regulations must also be observed.

Environmentally Acceptable Hydraulic Fluids for Axial Piston Units Notes, guidelines and permissible operating data
for the various type of environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluids. At the present time, three types of environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluids are being offered:

1. Hydraulic fluids based on vegetable oils, type HETG (e.g. rape seed oil) 2. Synthetic hydraulic fluids based on polyglycol, type HEPG (e.g. polyethyl-glycol PEG) 3. Synthetic hydraulic fluids based on esters, type HEE Hydraulic fluids based on vegetable oils, type HETG (TG Trigliceride)
Characteristics of fluid: (as new) Very good viscosity/temperature characteristics Good lubricity Pour point approximately 22 F (30 C) Care is needed when operating for long periods at very low temperatures. The pour point is not stable and rises quite noticeably. Make a specific check with the manufacturer. Good protection against corrosion Easily bio-degradable Good compatibility with NBR and Viton seals Density approximately 0.92 g/ml (petroleum oil 0.87 g/ml). The minimum requirements to DIN 51 524, parts 2 and 3 are generally fulfilled. FZG load test >10. Aging characteristics are not fulfilled, i.e. the neutralization number is not maintained 2.0. Permissible operating data In light of the above characteristics, these fluids can be used in conjunction with our axial piston units utilizing the same operating data as for HLP mineral oils. The temperature range may not exceed: 0 to 175 F (18 C to 80 C) In order to prevent premature aging of the fluid, we recommend that the tank temperature does not exceed: not exceed 160 F (70 C) At the present time, very little practical experience has been gathered with regard to the aging of the various fluids in this class, particularly with the ingress of water. The water portion should be < 0.1% as to the present state of knowledge. The fluid must therefore be carefully monitored and changed in good time if damage is to be avoided. Even where the fluid has not been run for 2000 hours, it must be changed once per year. Notes: As vegetable oils are not soluble in water, and thus deposit any accumulated water in the tank, it is therefore advantageous if the tank has a sloping base and if a drain tap is fitted. Conversion notes: In general, conversion to rape seed oil should present no problems as it is miscible with mineral oil. However, it should be noted, that when disposing of the fluid, only the rape seed oil content is biologically degradable. The internal coating on the inside of the tank must be clarified with the fluid manufacturer before converting to this fluid. The mineral oil should be drained from the system as completely as possible and when it is warm (max. admissible 2% remaining oil portion). Any residual oil and any contamination should be removed from the tank by means of lint-free cleaning cloths. It is recommended that the system is flushed with vegetable oil and that all functions are repeatedly operated in order to remove any residual mineral oil from the system. The flushing fluid must then be drained from the system. All hydraulic filter elements must be changed (Inspect filter material!) When filling and re-commissioning the system, please note the recommendations in RA 90 270 & 90 400. After a few days operation (approximately 50 hours), the filter elements should be checked and changed if necessary. This is because of the excellent wetting properties of vegetable oil. It removes deposits placed in the system by the previous use of petroleum oil and carries them in suspension to the filter. We recommend that the fluid be changed at least as frequently as shown below: First change after 500 working hours Second change after working 1000 hours further or, upon testing by the supplier, it may be run longer. However, it should then be tested every 300 working hours and must always be changed when 2000 working hours have been achieved. Subsequent changes, as above.

Environmentally Acceptable Hydraulic Fluids for Axial Piston Units

Synthetic hydraulic fluids based on polyglycol, type HEPG (PG polyglycol)
Characteristics of fluid: (as new) Very good viscosity/temperature characteristics Good lubricity Pour point approximately 40 F (40 C) Good protection against corrosion Good shear stability Good resistance to aging Good compatibility with NBR and Viton seals Easily soluble in water Bio-degradable Density approximately >1 g/ml (mineral oil 0.87 g/ml). The minimum requirements to DIN 51 524, parts 2 and 3 are fulfilled. (FZG load test >10). Permissible operating data Due to the high density of this fluid, the permissible speed of self aspirating main and auxiliary pumps in open circuits must be reduced by 20% Having taken this into consideration, these fluids can otherwise be used in conjunction with our axial piston units utilizing the same operating data as for HLP mineral oils. Our experience up to the present time with these pumps indicates that they have the same aging characteristics as mineral oils. We, therefore, recommend the same intervals for changing the fluid. First change after Second change after Subsequent changes every 500 working hours 2000 working hours 2000 working hours Conversion notes: Mineral oil should be drained from the system as completely as possible when it is at operating temperature (max. admissible 1% remaining oil portion). Any residual oil and any contamination should be removed from the tank and any internal paint must be checked for resistance to the fluid. The high density of the fluid compared with mineral oil must be noted. The minimum suction pressure at the pump may not be exceeded. This is of particular importance with suction line filters. All filter elements must be renewed. Only glass fibre or metal mesh filters may be used. Check the drive speed of the pumps. Due to the high density of the fluid, the maximum permissible speed of self aspirating pumps is reduced by 20%. It is imperative that the system is flushed and that all functions are repeatedly operated in order to remove any residual mineral oil from the system. The flushing fluid must then be drained from the system. When filling and re-commissioning the system, please note the recommendations in RA 90 270 & 90 400. As mineral oil is lighter than Polyglycol fluids, any residual oil found floating in the tank must be scooped or sucked away. According to the manufacturers recommendations, the final residual quantity of petroleum oil may not exceed 1% of the total volume of fluid. After a few days operation (approximately 50 hours), the filter elements should be checked and changed if necessary. The filters retain any residual oil and become clogged. In addition, because of the excellent wetting properties of this fluid, it removes deposits placed in the system by the previous use of mineral oil and carries them in suspension to the filter.

Even where the fluid has not been run for 2000 hours, it must be changed once per year. Notes: All hydraulic components are normally tested using mineral oil. They must, therefore, be completely cleaned before installation. Use Viton seals. Normal paints are attacked The manufacturers recommend: No paint (the tank lid should, however, be protected with a two part epoxy paint) This paint should be a two part chemical reaction hardening paint The tank should be of non-rusting material Not miscible with mineral oils (it can lead to solid deposits) Poly-carbonates, e.g. Makrolon are not resistant. Polymethacrylate, e.g. Plexidur T are resistant The ingress of water must be avoided. Water reduces the characteristics of the fluid and can only be removed by vaporization. Paper filter elements may not be used (use only glass fibre or metal mesh filters).

Environmentally Acceptable Hydraulic Fluids for Axial Piston Units

Synthetic hydraulic fluids based on esters, type HEE (E ester)
Characteristics of fluid: (as new) Very good viscosity/temperature characteristics Very good lubricity (FZG load test rating >10) Pour point approximately 22 F (30 C) (request the manufacturer) Good protection against corrosion Easily bio-degradable Good compatibility with NBR and Viton seals Miscible with normal mineral oils. Density approximately 0.92 g/ml (mineral oil 0.87 g/ml). The minimum requirements to DIN 51 524, parts 2 and 3 are fulfilled. Permissible operating data In light of the above characteristics, these fluids can be used in conjunction with our axial piston units utilizing the same operating data as for HLP mineral oils. According to the manufacturers data, the aging characteristics of this fluid are particularly good, but little practical experience is available. We, therefore, recommend that the fluid be changed at least as frequently as mineral oil, as shown below: First change after Second change after Further changes after every 500 working hours 2000 working hours 2000 working hours Notes: As these fluids are not soluble in water, they deposit any accumulated water in the tank. Therefore, it is advantageous if the tank has a sloping base and if a drain tap is fitted. Conversion notes: Use Viton seals. As this fluid is miscible with petroleum oil, systems may be converted with flushing in order to reduce the residual amount of petroleum oil to a minimum and so reduce the non-bio-degradable content (max. admissible 2% remaining oil portion). The internal coating on the inside of the tank must be clarified with the fluid manufacturer before converting to this fluid. All filter elements must be renewed. Only glass fibre or metal mesh filters may be used. In addition, it is recommended that the filter elements are changed shortly after conversion (at the latest after 50 hours working) as deposits formed in the system by the previous use of petroleum oil are dissolved and carried in suspension to the filter.

Even where the fluid has not been run for 2000 hours, it must be changed once per year. The water portion should be < 0.1% (attack by corrosion to nonferrous metal).
