PULAU PINANG

COURSE CODE : CEW 431

COURSE : FLUID MECHANICS AND HYDRAULICS LABORATORY
LEVEL OF OPENNESS : 2
CATEGORY : PARTIALLY OPEN
DEGREE OF OPEN ENDED (%) : 66%
PERIOD ACTIVITY : 3 WEEKS
2.5 : DETERMINATION OF HYDRAULIC PARAMETERS IN
EXPERIMENT NAME :
UNIFORM FLOW FOR OPEN CHANNELS

INTRODUCTION
Roughness coefficient represents the resistance to flows in channel and flood plains. Manning
equation is an indirect computation of streamflow as an alternative to Chezy equation.
It was introduced by the Irish Engineer Robert Manning in 1889 that applies to uniform flow in
open channels and is a function of the channel velocity, flow area and channel slope.
OBJECTIVES
PREAMBLE To obtain appropriate coefficients to satisfy the Manning formula of a corrugated and roughened
bed at different flow rates.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the experiment, students should be able to:
i. analyze the roughness and hydraulic properties at flume channel
ii. obtain roughness coefficient using Manning formula
iii. deduce the difference of roughness coefficient at corrugated and/or roughened bed
The presence of various channel bed (e.g: roughened, smooth, corrugated) provide difference
roughness coefficient due to obstruction element and fluid drag provided by the bed channel.
PROBLEM Knowing roughness coefficient is crucial for flood plain management, designing hydraulic
STATEMENT structures and river monitoring purpose.
This experiment provide avenue to study the roughness coefficient under different bed channel
and ranges of flow rates.
DATA ACQUISTION
WAYS AND
Data required for this experiment are water levels at various points with respect to different
MEAN
discharge.
DATA INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS
The report must include:
i. Detailed descriptions of the procedures/methods and photo of conducting the laboratory
works are also needed.
ii. All readings and data from the experiment should be converted to appropriate units and
REPORT
tabulated accordingly.
iii. Sample calculation/interpretation of data/plot of graph.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
1. Discuss and conclude your findings from the data analysis.
2. From the result obtained, deduce the differences between the obtained roughness
coefficient from the flume and the proposed roughness for practical purpose in natural
channel.
3. Relate the results with the engineering application.
REFERENCE Include list of references at the end of your report.
