Removing the power steering gear

General

General
The description only applies to left-hand drive vehicles with a chassis front end width
of 1,020 mm.

IMPORTANT!

On vehicles with front axle air suspension, the frame must be supported on axle
stands and the front air bellows must be emptied. Do not place stands under the front
torque rod brackets.

2. Support the vehicle front axle on stands.1

3. Remove the bumper corner cover in front of the power steering gear.2
Remove the cover plate by the footstep.3

4. Loosen the screws for the lamp insert.

5. Bend the lamp insert out and remove the electrical connections.

6. Loosen the bend joint screws and remove the lamp insert.

7. Remove the washer container cover and cut off the cable ties for the cables on
the top of the container.

8. Plug the hoses so that washer fluid does not run out.

9. Remove the washer container retaining screws and lift the container down.
10. Cut off the cable ties for the cables behind the headlamp casing.

11. Remove the screws for the lamp insert casing from underneath.

13. Remove the screws on the outside of the casing and remove the casing.

15. Set the wheels in the straight ahead position and remove the input shaft from the
power steering gear. Remove the universal joint from the power steering gear in-
put shaft.

16. Remove the steering column universal joint from the power steering gear input
shaft. If necessary, use puller 99 420.

17. Place a receptacle under the fluid reservoir and power steering gear.
18. Clean the power steering gear and the area immediately around the power steer-
ing gear thoroughly.

19. Remove pressure and return pipes from the power steering gear. Remove the
pipes in the joint unions next to the right-hand frame member.
20. Remove the pipes.

21. Remove the thick hose from the fluid reservoir.


22. Undo the engine oil filler pipe and compressed air pipes from the fluid reservoir
attachment.

23. Remove the fluid reservoir for cleaning and filter renewal, with return hose con-
nected.
Vehicles with dual circuit steering have double fluid reservoirs. The number of
retaining screws and their location is however the same as for vehicles with sin-
gle fluid reservoirs.
24. Remove the fluid reservoir bracket from the power steering gear.
25. Carefully press out the compressed air pipes in a slightly sideways direction.

26. Check that the marking on the power steering gear input shaft is straight ahead
and in the middle of the marking on the valve housing, when the wheels are in
the straight ahead position.

27. Remove the draglink ball joint from the droparm using puller 99 435.
28. Tilt the cab and secure it using the cab strut.

29. Fit lifting tool 99 325 on the power steering gear.

31. Fit the following fixture tools to the gearbox jack:


– Bracket and fixture beam 98 405 98 403
– Holder 98 402
– Fixture shaft 98 403 98 402

32. Connect fixture shaft 98 403 to lifting tool 99 325 on the power steering gear.
33. Remove the power steering gear retaining screws.
34. Pull the power steering gear out forwards at an angle.
