1.1 Overview
DID (Direct Inward Dialing) trunk groups allow the OmniPCX Enterprise to be connected to the
public network via DID analog lines. DID trunk groups are sometimes referred to as DDI
(Direct Dialing Inward) trunk groups.
Signaling analysis allows incoming calls to be directly routed to the called party (DID
functionality). This type of trunk group is used for incoming calls only.
DID trunk groups are supported by DDI boards in ACT format and in S or L racks.

2.1 Basic description

DID trunk groups are used to connect an analog public network to the OmniPCX Enterprise.
They are only used to handle incoming calls. Other trunk groups, NDID for example, must be
used to handle outgoing calls.

Figure 2.1: DID trunk groups on an OmniPCX Enterprise

A number of DID signaling variants are used on public networks. The OmniPCX Enterprise is
adapted to handle these via use of:
- A specific board.
- The appropriate configuration.
For OmniPCX Media Gateways, the DDI2 and DDI4 boards are described in the module DDI -
Installation procedure .
For ACT Media Gateways, the DDI board is described in the module DID (USA) - Hardware
description or the module DID-D - Hardware description .

2.2 Definitions
WINK:
A signal sent between two telecommunications devices as part of a hand-shaking protocol. It is
a momentary interruption in SF (Single Frequency) tone, indicating that the distant central
office is ready to receive the digits that have just been dialed. In telephone switching systems,

% &%'# '# # 2-1

Chapter 2 &%'# '# #

a single supervisory pulse. On a digital connection such as a T-1 circuit, a wink is signaled by
a brief change in the A and B signaling bits. On an analog line, a wink is signaled by a change
in polarity (electrical + and -) on the line.
Wink operation (Wink start) :
A timed off-hook signal normally of 140 milliseconds, which indicates the availability of an
incoming register for receiving digital information from the calling office. A control system for
phone systems using address signaling.

2.3 Additional information on protocol

DID signaling is typically used for trunks. It is typically the only way that a CO switch can
provide two-way dialing with direct inward dialing. In all the DID protocols, off-hook is indicated
by A=B=1, and on-hook is indicated by A=B=0. If dial pulse dialing is used, the A and B bits
are pulsed to indicate the addressing digits. There are several further important subclasses of
DID robbed-bit signaling:
- DID Wink Start—Feature Group B :
In the original Wink Start Protocol, the terminating side responds to an off-hook from the
originating side with a short wink (transition from on-hook to off-hook and back again). This
wink tells the originating side that the terminating side is ready to receive addressing digits.
After receiving addressing digits, the terminating side then goes off-hook for the duration of
the call. The originating endpoint maintains off-hook for the duration of the call.
- DID Wink Start—Feature Group D :
In Feature Group D Wink Start with Wink Acknowledge Protocol, the terminating side
responds to an off-hook from the originating side with a short wink (transition from on-hook
to off-hook and back again) just as in the original Wink Start. This wink tells the originating
side that the terminating side is ready to receive addressing digits. After receiving
addressing digits, the terminating side then provides another wink (called an
Acknowledgment Wink) that tells the originating side that the terminating side has received
the dialed digits. The terminating side then goes off-hook to indicate connection when the
ultimate called endpoint has answered. The originating endpoint maintains off-hook for the
duration of the call.
- DID Immediate Start :
In the Immediate Start Protocol, the originating side does not wait for a wink before
sending addressing information. After receiving addressing digits, the terminating side then
goes off-hook for the duration of the call. The originating endpoint maintains off-hook for
the duration of the call.

3.1 Procedure
The configuration procedure consists of the following steps:
1. Configuring signaling. Signaling is configured with:
• The board used.
• The country selected.
• The Trunk COS used.
2. Declaring the board.
3. Creating the trunk group.
4. Creating the trunks.
The following figure shows how the objects required to implement an analog DID trunk group
are organized.
